Help w/gas vaccuum seal for XK140

I am having trouble installing the black plastic half ball piece that goes on the metal disk that is attached to the spring under the gas tank door. This piece creates a vaccum seal for the gas tank. I cannot figure out how to make the black piece stay attached to the metal disk. I also cannot get the black piece to stretch to fit over the metal disk.

Appreciate the help. The first and third photos are upside down.

That is the wrong seal, that is the one for a XK150 late, that tank has a build in ventilation.
The right one for a XK140 is a cork round seal.
As the is no ventilation on the XK140 tank, it will suck vacuum, and you do not get any fuel after a while.

Thank you for the information. I was told the black 1/2 ball was a replacement for the cork round seal...
