I've just upgraded AVG to this version and almost come to a full stop on some applications and when browsing or e-mail.
Has anybody else had, or know of, this problem?
If this is just "how version 8 works" - does anybody else use a simple free anti virus software package that will not impact on performance in the same way

My son is of the opinion that AVG 8 is total cr@p. It causes just the problems you describe and even system crashes. He has installed a program called avast as in avast there you landlubbers. Do a google search to find a download for avast
I have used AVG 7 in the past, its done the job with muinimum fuss, upgraded to version 8 as requested by AVG (downloaded from CNET) and its been running spot on (windows XP).
AVG 8 is working fine for me too - If your machine is running like a dog, it's probably during a full scan, I've changed the daily scan to a weekly one in the small hours, there's no need to scan everything every day. If you download anything or get an email attachment just save it and use the right click menu for an instant scan of that file only. AVG is contantly watching your processes for viral activity and will stop anything it knows about as soon as it tries to run anyway.
when I look at the free download for AVG 8 it says its only for a 90 day trial .... what happens after that? I am running 7.5 at the moment with with PC tools firewall

Hi
I have downloaded and installed AVG on dozens of personal computers and all seemed to work fine bar 1. that came up with a similar problem to yours. I got round it by uninstalling AVG 7 manually first before installing AVG 8, for some unknown reason they were causing aggro for each other. The other problem that I have read about is a conflict between norton and AVG, even though norton has supposidly been uninstalled parts of it remain and cause conflicts. you would need to remove them using the norton removal tool
Hope some of this is of help
