Hi

First of all big thanks to "Kelvin1962" "bikerjodie" "westville" "ian D" and every one else who contributed there superb input and knowledge on doing this mod :D

you will need a 12v 5 pin relay that has numbers 87,87a,86,30 and 85 on it -----> http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12v-30A-40A-5...250795686305?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item3a649679a1
and about 10 foot of cable and you will need 4 spade conectors and a roll of inserlation tape,

right this is my step by step guide to get your wing mirrors to auto fold on double locking with your key remote

lets get started ......... first thing you MUST do is to disconnect the battery (remove the negative connecter)

Image

i had these bits n bobs to help me ........

Image

Image

Image

Image

undo all 4 screws to get the glove box to drop down and hang

Image

give it a tug and a pull and it should come out

Image

once you have it hanging, remove the 3 screws holding the glove box on and the you can completely remove it

Image

Image

remove the bottom footwell cover and somehow get you hand up behind the fuse box  this it easy said then done !!! my tip is  ........... if you feel behind the fuse box you will find that theres a empty bay  the blue plug you need is directly above the empty one  once you feel like you cant get it out (take a coffee break) take a deep breath and try again, as bikerjobie said the clip is on the passenger door side so just feel about and squeeze and wiggle lol and eventually you will end up with this .....

Image

we will be useing the RED wire !!! :D

Image

Image

now that the hard bits done  .... on the new relay you have purchased connect a 2 foot length of cable (mine just happens to be red) from prong 87 of the relay to the red wire on the power fold mirror relay

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

i did what bikerjodie suggested and did not use the scotchloks  i just striped the red wire and wrapped the new wire on to it and wrapped electrical tape round it 8)

Image

then prongs 85 and 30 on the new relay both go to a good earth, i put both ends together to get earthed .......

Image

Image

i then grounded them to a screw on the side which is attached to the main frame

Image

then you will need enough cable to go from prong 86 of the new relay to the drivers side of the car where the general electronic control module is fitted under the drivers dash,
next you will need to take off the lower panel under the steering wheel the one with the small glove box in.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

you will see a big silver box with five big plugs going into it .
has you look at it the first plug on the left look at the top row and the fourth cable from the left will be coloured YELLOW AND BLACK

Image

Image

splice your long wire ......

Image

i used a wire coat hanger (straightened) and taped new wire to it and stuck it through .......

Image

Image

pocked it through behind the ashtray / stereo ......

Image

Image

untie it and pull through :)

Image

now the cable you fished from the passenger side from the new relay on prong 86 splice onto the yellow and black cable from the general electronic control module

Image

Image

then wrap it up nicely ........
Image

put the battery back on and ........... BINGO !!!

Now tidy up

thank you once again to all who added input to this mod :D

Just to add: if your car has 2 red wires in the blue plug (like mine did) use the same wire as per photos.

Glad I could help prisoners, oh did mine, works great! Such an easy mod, shame Jaguar didn't do this as standard, even the new Ford Fiesta has this feature!

Oh I noticed when I did mine I have no soundproofing on the back of my glovebox and I have a stack load of extra wires and connectors around the passenger fuse box and the GECM is a later revision even though mine is an 04 plate. Maybe a petrol/diesel difference perhaps.

Excellent post, made it look easy! I am too scared to go messing with electrics so if anyone wants to do mine I will pay you with Beer haha!! :D

I'd do it, but I guess Germany is quite a way just to get auto folding mirrors working

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Great guide but just twisting bare wire together an then tapping it all up is a really poor job, one that will cause you no end of problems down the line. Learn to solder. Sorry to be downbeat.

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Excellent stuff. I'll have to dig out the wiring diagram and see what it is happening but looks impressive.
Are there any issues if you use the button on the door to fold the mirrors in and then tried to double lock it with the fob, i.e. does it get out of sync? or require cycling through a lock/unlock cycle to get it to do something?

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

They do the opposite, eg. go back to open when you press the fob.

All it does is send a signal to the mirrors via the red wire.

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Had a quick look at mine today, took the glove box out but can't see any brown relay I have a grey relay is this the same one just a different colour ???

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Unlikely, but some questions to help me help you.

Have you got powerfold mirrors?

Have you got memory seats?

Is the grey relay in the same position as the earlier photos in this thread show the brown one?

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Yes got power fold mirrors via the small round button on drivers door
got power seats but not memory
and yes grey relay is in the same place as brown one in the photos, feeling the plug on the back the part you squeeze to release the plug is on top not towards the passengers door as stated in the first post. (well it feels that way) :0

Thanks

hi
i have a 2003 x type and my power fold relay is behind the fuse box at the top clipped to the body and its a brown relay you are looking for not a grey one. it was on the later x type they fitted the relay into the fuse box, i cant believe when i started the how to do power fold mirrors with the remote that it would have so many people interested in this mode

Hi I'm just attempting this mod today, is the relay I am looking for the brown one at the top of the pic and is the red wire the one I need to splice into to go across to the other side of the car?
Thanks in advance, I pulled the blue plug out as per the earlier instructions but it bears no resemblence to the one in the pics concerning wire colours.

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

On earlier cars that grey relay is the Ignition Relay! Look for a brown relay behind the fuse panel as per kelvin's instructions. If powerfold operates with the ignition turned off, then proceed as per instructions earlier in this thread. No need to get inside the door!!

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Mine is an 2003 and yes they do fold with ignition off (always live) So I need to be looking at the top of the fuse board then is it easily seen or do I need to remove fuse board ??

Thanks for that much appreciated

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

if you put your hand up behind the fuse box right at the top you should be able to feel it or better still get a small mirror and tilt it untill you can get a view of the back of the fuse box and pull it off the clip then lift it over the top of the fuse box and you will have just enough room to work on it. there is only one red wire that is the one that goes to the new relay pin 87

Re: HOW TO AUTO FOLD WING MIRRORS ON DOUBLE LOCK (WITH PHOTO

Your seemingly unusual arrangement intrigued me and now knowing yours is a 2003 model, I've checked out the relevant wiring diagrams and would suggest the following easier alternative! Stop looking for the module - you know its up there somewhere but what you need is the red wire running from it to the door switchpack. This is more easily found behind the trim on the right hand side of the driver's footwell. (See Autofold with Memory in the How To section for details on how to remove it)

Behind this trim are a number of multi-pin connectors. The one you want is one of the black 20 way ones. The red wire you want is the only one (of two, I think) that has a Blue wire on one side of it and a White with Red tracer on the other side. It's Pin No if you can read it is 16 The one you DON'T want is in another black 20 way connector and has a Yellow on one side and a Red with White tracer on the other side and is Pin No is 11, so there should be no confusion. However, if in doubt, ask for more info by all means!

Having the Red wire and the Yellow/Black wire from the GEM just above it plus proper earth points on the A pillar all wire runs are short and neat and there's room to secure the relay as well. Good luck!
