Checked out a nice XJ6 in silver which was tempting and in very good condition but not the spec I am looking for. Really want a V8 and am prepared to wait for the right one.

I am looking into an XJ8 which ticks a lot of boxes but is four or five hours away so going to view is difficult.
Looking to get an AA inspection but I am not the only interested party.

For me it would be S-Type, optimally 4.2 auto, or 3.0 manual.

XJ is gorgeous, but it is too big as a daily driver (in Europe at least). S-Type (and XF) hit the sweet spot re size.

Mr Mut The s type manual 3.0 is a great car , I had one for 5 years but the XJ (X350 or 35 is just so much better, it may be bigger but visibility is better in the XJ road holding is better i had my XJ X358 for 9 years now and It is my daily driver.

To the right Eye the s type is a prettier/classic shape

The ride is certainly not harsh and the interior is a lovely place to be.

The Xj is probably a better car, but the s type has a certain something.

Wow. 9 years is a lot. How it is re maintenance like? How is the engine, transmission and other stuff holding up? How many Km? Etc.

I ask, because when I will replace my X-Type, I thought about going for either STR or an XJ of your generation.

The car has now done 126,000 miles which I think is 201,600Km, it has been serviced at the proper intervals, and had the odd extra oil change if needed, It has been mostly routine maintenance, but all the brake pipes have been replaced. a new offside Hub( wheel bearing). The advice about getting petrol rather diesel is sensible if you don't do many miles. Without wishing to tempt fate too much I would say its holding out pretty well. There have been some rust issues on the earlier S types but as the X350/358 is Aluminium
that is not an issue. There is some much better guidance regarding XJs on the specific section , advice given by people with a better mechanical knowledge than mine. Whatever you decide i hope you get a good one that will keep you smiling while driving

    Thank you for answering.

In the end, I think that smiling while driving is what defines a Jaguar.

Probably the best solution is to buy both.
