The 2.0 above Rogues sounds and looks nice but I'm near Oxford and he's in Newcastle! Too far me thinks!

Sadly I beg to differ. It had moody written all over it (or under it depending on how you see it). I think you done the right thing by walking away. The sills alone would've put me off, as there can be a lot of rot to the inner sections, and unless these were rectified as well, a new sill would hide it for a short while, before they too become infected.
Did it still have the steel wheels fitted? Don't forget that alloy wheels are used now to get rid of excess brake heat as a safety measure. Steel wheels are only used on low powered cars, and even then that's rare these days.
There are plenty of X estates out there, just keep looking. Also, not sure if you know, but you can now check previous MOT's online, just google it. Normally shows last 3 or 4 if i remember correctly.
Good luck in your search, just don't get blinded by bright paintwork and bells and whistles.

It is all extremely appreciated and it goes to help people with many different terminal illnesses nearing their end of life, to make them more comfortable. Thank you.

    Just found this little beauty:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152318217280

But having just done an MOT check, it has suffered from very similar corroding issues - there seems to be a pattern emerging here!
It is an issue on early models, and when you go to see one don't be afraid to dig the crud out that gathers between the plastic over sill nd the chassis sill. If you do buy an X, make sure that you clean this are every other wash or so, just to keep the area crud free. The sills do pop off, but the plastic tbs can snap.

I was aware of the Coolant leak which is why I suggested a chat with him rather than sending a cheque
It was a chance to draw some more detail from him,I know absolutely nothing about X Types though there
are some practises when buying a second hand car which are universal.I see one here in Milton Keynes
in dark metallic green,if thats of any interest I am happy to meet you there or look on your behalf

A very kind offer there! Also, further to reddiesel's offer, I'm on the Hants/Berks border so might also be able to lend an eye.

Aye I didn't realise sills were such a massive job. Nah it failed an MOT with steels on then passed a few months later with jaguar 18".
Yeah the GOV website list all previous MOT's in good details.

Thanks guys they are some very kind offers which I may well take you up on! Also much obliged for all the advice and info today.
I don't recall seeing a green one in MK?

I am away now until W/C 28th Nov, so I'll try not to look as often - give it time for new ones to appear!

    Have a look here.

Still need to look carefully. Immaculate interior doesn't mean immaculate underneath. It would seem inspecting one of these cars needs car experience of the 60s and 70s, i.e. rust is your biggest enemy !
