Buying a used X-Type between £1,000 - £1,500
Hi, I'm buying a Jaguar for the first time. I've always fancied one and last time I had the chance went for a BMW 320 which was OK. Now I'm looking for a used X-Type in the £1,000 - £1500 range. Any advice on which are best for my type of driving and what to look for would be really, really appreciated.
I'm a very steady driver, and rarely do over 70 on the motorway, and keep under the speed limit in urban areas, and have slow acceleration and cornering. I'll do a couple of motorway runs a month but other than that it's just short journeys 1 - 5 miles.
Would a diesel of petrol x-type be best for this? I'm guess the smaller 2.0 engine would be good. Are there also any common signs of faults to look out for when viewing?
Believe it or not, but rust will be your biggest potential problem. All X-types were built at the Halewood car plant near Liverpool, the only Jaguar built outside Coventry and Birmingham. This plant previously made the Ford Escort a car not intended to last all that long, so I suspect the paint process at the time was not really good enough for the car.
The rusting occurs on the sills behind the plastic cover-sill, mostly at the rear end near the suspension mounting. Needless to say, it is an MOT failure item.I have personally seem an X-type in my local Jaguar independent that had just had new sills fitted. So this is a cost item you need to factor into your purchase.
Thanks, I'll look out for that
