    six speed box

i wonder if anyone has an opinion on whether a six speed gearbox has any advantages. The x type has never struck me as being low geared in fifth, does the six speed box have a higher top.

I've had 2.0d 5 speed and 2.2d 6 speed, the gearbox imo is a better gearbox, but first gear is quite low, I wonder if the extra gear and the ratio difference was for those who bought the 2.2d for towing a caravan. It'd explain the lower ratio first gear and higher top gear. It's suited to motorway cruising well though, from even 40 just floor it and go. But the 2.2 does have more torque than the 2.0 so it's well suited.

Hi, never owned a five speed, but at 80 mph my auto is running at 2000 rpm, yep, that's 40 mph per 1000 in top, can't beat it.

Thing I find is that the 6 speeder is nowhere near as efficient fuel wise at legal speeds. My old 5 speeder used to easily give 50mpg plus at legal speeds, the 6 speeder is 42mpg ish. So if anything it's over geared in 6th. I've not tried not using 6th yet to see if it improves. The gearing it top at almost 40mph per 1000 rpm is just too high for the motor at 70mph in my view.

To be more precise, at my preferred cruising speed of 80 my rpm read about 2.2k. I used to get 48mpg on a decent mixed run (10% urban, 50% motorway, 40% A/B roads). I didn't check my overall average when I sold the car but when I last looked I think it was 43.
