I just bought a s/c 3 litre .Although a 2015 MY It is new..I took it out for 500 k yesterday to run in. Compared to my old 2010 x351 5 l it has the 8 speed box . What was surprising for a car with no kms on it was that it did 8.8 kms/ l or about 32 mpg on its first tank.
so Jim I can thoroughly recommend the 3l s/c.Mine has the s tweak to 280kw .

    Lol, god no.

Like all things worthwhile, it takes time to do research, know what you're after, cover all the bases etc

For me , that time may be in a couple of months.
My BFAM on the other hand may be about a year away from his and he's doing his research and due diligence right now too

You can be certain that when he moves everything is in place, the time is right and the right car is available

It has been in every top spec Ford since the mid 80's , not sure about XJ models ?
I've not noticed mine go red... ...though we haven't really had any cold weather since I got it in April.

One thing about watching the market closely and seeing what's happening, very interesting

Like Rich I've built a comprehensive excel spreadsheet to look at what I'm interested in. That covers the particular model, price range, fuel type, registration number and mileages along with details of bhp ratings and which site, or combination they are on.
This info coupled with exterior / interior colours and any price changes or notifications of sale and date.

Cars come and go as you'd expect of course but...there are so many tricks that most of us I'm sure are aware of...

Prices don't always only go down!
Sometimes they do reduce by several hundred pounds, even perhaps £1000 or so, sometimes it can be £30 or £40 only. Not only that but prices are actually changed and have increased from time to time.

Sometimes a car has disappeared from the site, so the spreadsheet has it marked as sold and an approx date ( accurate to within a few days or so )
This happens quite frequently only for said same car to pop up again a week or so later and with a different price of course.

Mark ups /margins will of course vary depending on the price range
These margins as checked against what a private sale would be to offer an indicator can range from £2407 up to £6190 on the versions I've looked at

That's not to say they will be achieved or even are achievable, but what's being asked.....they are 2 different things

Believe it or not, Jaguar dealers aren't always adding the big bucks as opposed to a lot of smaller Independent garages from what I've seen so far

I don't understand this Spreadsheet Business , what happened to knowing what you want and simply going and buying
it , its not exactly Nuclear Physics so why make it so ? The only difference with buying a second hand Jaguar today and
buying a second hand Jaguar years back is the prevalence of the Leasing Market , this impacts on both the Specifications
Manufactured and the Type of Owners who drive them . Another factor which I see little mention of in this Forum is of
course damage to the Leased Vehicle , I know Paintshops rammed to the gunnels with ex Lease Jaguars BMW and Mercedes
all being tidied by Dealers , I also know of smaller Garages doing this work " on the quiet " for some Sales Manager who
has dented the Front wing and is terrified by the Penalty the Leasing Company will levy on him , both scenarios are a minefield
for the Private Buyer . Then of course we have the attempts by Jaguar Dealers to hide the origin of the Stock they are selling
by using the ubiquitous " ex Jaguar " or " Direct from Jaguar " the Log Book having a PO Box number that is a front for Thrifty
Van Hire . Your Spreadsheet won't and cant account for any of these Scenarios Jim which is why I wouldn't bother my arse
with it . Your last Point for me is an interesting one , especially these " small Independent Garages " for me they fall into two
categories , long established second hand Jaguar Dealers such as Chiltern and Tasker and Lacey and the other category where
someone buys half a dozen second hand Jaguar and Mercedes and calls himself a " Specialist " or a Prestige Dealer , I would have
thought you would be very unlikely to find what your looking for from either of these Types Jim . Your looking at Jaguar Main Dealers
or other " High End " Dealerships who have had an X351 as a PX or are you talking Jaguars in general ? If the latter then sadly the
Price is the Price , the Dealer Principle gauges the price from his book , looks at his Market and prices accordingly .
I have always taken the view that a car is a depreciating asset and by luck as much as judgement I can actually go and buy these cars
with my Debit Card but other than vanity , why would you ? Any man that lays out over £30k for a Diesel Jaguar is an Idiot in my estimation
and its pointless blowing smoke up your arse telling you otherwise , they are £20k to £25k in order to make financial sense and the fact that
Jaguar themselves are cutting Production indicates to anyone with Intelligence that the Bubble has burst for " big money " Diesels .
Still no doubt you will Blunder on with the " my money , my choice " bollocks like some Drunk Lottery Winner , you are Scottish Jim and I
genuinely expect more from you , Draw £5k for your present Chariot and have £20k on the drip , manageable figures that will make Tress
happy and yourself as well , whats not to like ? Apologies in advance for any upset Jim but I cant do braying Donkey , this is real money
in a Post Brexit Britain , Jaguar aren't ignoring the Financial Implications , you shouldn't either

Two very different things! The first is fairly easy; all one has to do in particular is find out if one can afford it. The second is actually the wrong way to buy anything unless you have more money than sense. Notes, in whatever form, including a photographic memory, help people get a handle on what is the real going rate, what spec/options have a real value, etc. If one has the time to research a purchase, it has a very high likelihood of being a better purchase. There is even at least one website watching some of the continental markets specifically designed to try and unravel the games that sellers play. You say that a car is a depreciating "asset" but then recommend that people just go and buy without doing their research, risking paying over the odds - you appear to be promoting very confusing guidance.
