    Grinding Noise

    Hi

Bit of a problem with my XK8 that i'd appreciate your thoughts on...

Took it to my local indy to get all the usual rust bits sorted and a transmission service (sump off, new filter, gaskets etc). All good so far. However on driving it back from the garage it starts to give me a grinding noise that it wasn't doing before. From the limited amount of testing i could give it before returning the car to them it appears to only do it uphill in 5th gear.

The garage, though they've not looked in detail yet, are thinking it's something to do with the prop, but would seem odd to me given when it occurs.

I have a recording of the noise here.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

    Thanks

    Ross

I'd guess they didn't do the gearbox oil change properly following the full procedure - probably not enough oil in the gearbox or something.

No disrespect to your garage, but did they go through the "proper" procedure - correct fluid temperature etc., and did they use the correct fluid ?
What year ? I guess an early car with the ZF 5 speed transmission, but can you confirm that please ?

Basic logic would suggest that if it was OK when they got it, and not OK now, it must be something they did, and I would not have thought they would have gone anywhere near the propshaft !!

(I think we were both typing at the same time !!

Thanks - you both echo my feelings on the subject. Especially frustrating considering the stories I've had from the over the week: it started on Tuesday with "yes we've heard that before when we've done the gearbox so we're re-doing it" to "no, we've not had chance to do anything with it yet but 3 of us have heard the sound now and all agree it's not the gearbox" on Friday.

It's a 2002 4.0 with the 5 speed box. Doesn't make the noise at all in manual, when i shift into D and it drops to 5th is when the problem starts.

They're a local jaguar 'specialist' - not going to name and shame because (a) i'm not sure the forum allows it and (b) they still could rectify the situation. Suffice to say i'm not impressed so far!

I have a similar problem... Up to 3rd in manual.. NO noise.. 4 in manual and 4 and 5 in D and grinding noise at 1500 RPM. Is checking box fluid first step then?

Where do you live? Would be helpful if you put it on your profile. I have a garage in mind to advise you only if your local though.

Low gearbox oil? the wrong gearbox oil??

Its the ZF5HP24 so the fluid change is quite straight forward.

Hi Frank, I'm down in Salisbury.

Apologies for this reply being well over a year late, can't believe it's been that long. Problem still persists so a garage recommendation would be appreciated.
