    They are also at the bottom of the engine where you can't get at them and they can be exposed to water spray.

    Timing belt replaced by main dealer at 97,000 and DPF and EGR removed and remapped by indy at same time. Breathing more easily ( me and car ! ) now. But thanks for the response.

    The car would be scrap with a blown engine 'cos of the DPF anyway.

    Why is the diesel alternator different to the petrol one. ( Ignorance being shown here )

    There are different alternators on V6, V8 and diesel models.

    The engines were developed at different times by different people.

    The latest design engine is the diesel, this was developed by Ford for PSA Peugeot Citroen, and also used in the Jaguar and Land Rover models although with different turbo setups in different vehicles.

    Are the outputs of the diesel and petrol alternators the same?
    Just measured mine on a 3.0l and was just under 15v during start up. Battery is a little low at 12.24v.

    Do they charge at a higher voltage for the first few minutes then taper down closer to 14v? Smart charging?
    I'm curious to test this tomorrow after a drive as guys on FB were saying mine is shot because its charging at 14.9 ish.

    voltage out on cars from 2003 onwards is controlled by the ecu
