    Rear noise

1991 XJ6. When I drive over bumps I hear a loud noise that seems to be coming from the back area of the car. It is a deeper flat banging sound. Not high pitch or squeaky. I’ve had several mechanics look at the car but no one has been able to tell me what it is.
Could it be shock or strut or worn bushings that are not easily accessible? Has anyone had this problem? Pushing on the back of the trunk and shocks appear to work properly. No bouncing or resonating. Car rides well. Just that banging noise over every bump.

    Any ideas? Thanks to all.

    rear end noise

[QUOTE=Bill Behrbom;1095951]1991 XJ6. When I drive over bumps I hear a loud noise that seems to be coming from the back area

Without hearing the noise a bit hard to diagnose.. Could easily be the rear shock struts (I assume the self leveling suspension has been replaced) they come out easy enough.. a bit scary to compress spring and take apart but all the bushings were reasonably priced.
I'd check the other rear suspension points first to insure they are not the problem. I rebuilt the rear struts on my 89 XJ6 and installed bilstein shocks.
    Good luck
