    Best buys x type

Hi, we’re looking to buy an x type petrol and automatic . Any tips on what to look for/at? All we’ve heard is bad reports. So which one should we go for?
    Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I would go for the latest you can afford with the best spec.
Models built after 2004 should not suffer with sill rot for a start.
AWD transfer boxes have proved problematic but that's usually do to enthusiastic driving habits.

    Hope you find good one.

Ahem ! Paul Skilleter writing in the JEC magazine recently, told of serious rear sill corrosion in his 2008 X-type estate. Due to the plastic outer cover, this corrosion is unfortunately hidden until it gets so serious it comes to the attention of the owner or the garage maintaining the car or MOTing it.

My car is nearly 13 years old. 112K and is still solid underneath.
I suppose it does depend a lot on where you live and the type of weather you have. Having retired I do about 9000 miles a year and do not drive much in the snow so salt is not a problem. I also keep an eye on the drain holes in the sills to ensure they are clear of debris.
