How is your hearing these days? Was it ruined?
I have my hearing tested every 12 months and have never been below H1H1, with all those years of loud music it’s had no lasting effect.

I had a 16v Renault Clio which went like stink and a huge noisy exhaust and blacked out windows. The best feature was that I hot wired the drivers seat so that when set if someone tried to steal the car they would get a huge shock to the bum which had the potential to see off anybody with a dicky ticker! Happy days !

We all thought that the scars on your arse came all from the corporal punishment from your school days or your domina.

But do appreciate a nice exhaust, and not obnoxiously loud..

Just dig the baffles out your Minis stock exhaust and voila a nice deep exhaust!

The college car park is rife with kids and their lowered corsas and those other things!!

never mind a milkfloat can out accelerate them at least they sound cool
As a motorbike learner I had a BSA Bantam 175. I spring loaded the baffles on the exhaust, so that when I opened the throttle wide they moved backwards down the flared exhaust pipe. Still had no power, but sounded impressive!

I remember back in the early 70's when my brother and I were young and we were always messing about with bikes. He had an old Lamberetta and modified the exhaust by removing the rubber bulb from one of those squeezy horns and inserting the trumpet part into the exhaust.
After ten minutes of tearing round the estate he came back to a right rollicking from mum but we never saw a stray cat or dog for days.

Was ace at the time I thought, 2x12” subs in a bespoke enclosure, alpine CD player with graphic equaliser, 8 speakers, 1 ohm 1Kw amp RMS DLS monoblock amp running the subs and an amp running the speakers with 2 batteries and 0 gauge cabling through out. Large exhaust and lowered way too much! Thankfully I grew out of it many years ago, sold it all and now 15 years later I’m quite sensible...ish.
    The Rover sounds awesome.

I used to fit better stereos in cars as a 'yoof' mostly because the typical radio in a Mk2 Escort couldn't be heard over 50mph...

Most of my time and money was wasted* on handling or performance mods. Oddly after lowering a Mk2 Sierra it handled so much better on long A-road runs my MPG went up as I wasn't slowing for the corners anymore...

As for cars with 23 speakers etc, half of that is marketing, half is improved sound. Take an old three way speaker, separate it into components (tweeter, mid & bass) fit them at different heights & angles for the best sound. And your car that had four speakers (one in each door) now has 12. Add a sub or two somewhere for base as door speakers are often too small & you're into the teens already, then some centre dash/parcelshelf speakers for 'fill' etc..

The only thing I'd like to add to my XJR is a bit more bass as it doesn't have the optional subs, but I'm not sure I'll ever bother as 90% of the time I've got classic FM on (as you should in a 'old gits' car).

I remember my mate had an Opel manta in mid 1980s.... Beautiful boy racer car....He put £600 stereo (a lot of money back then )...He went to part exchange the car and the dealership offered him £800 for the car ?....My mate said "it's got £600 worth of stereo in it it ?" ...The dealer said ..."not interested mate !" So he ripped it out ....Holes everywhere...
Still got £800 P.X.....And sold the stereo for £400 !!
