Okay, so now add up the following amounts of money and see how quickly you can without using a calculator:

one pound twelve shillings and sixpence
six pounds six shillings and two pence (tuppence)
ten pounds eighteen shillings and nine pence
forty-two pounds seventeen shillings and eight pence
ninety-six pounds forteen shillings and seven pence

    £. s. d.
    1 12 6
    6 6 2
    10 18 9
    42 17 8
    96 14 7

Oh, and add a couple of guineas to the total!

I did a quick head calc and got £158-9s-6p plus an extra £2-2s for the guineas making £160-11s-6p

Of course that's just my 2cents

Ahh yes those were the days eh ?....When we had 240 pennies to the pound ?.....And we still had the half penny ?

Great memories indeed ... but actually the halfpenny ceased to be legal tender from 06/69.

And then there was the wee little farthing until 1960 ... what on earth did that buy?

Loose sweets could be bought by weight or number, many sweets were sold 4 for a penny, but shopkeepers would also sell them per piece for the less wealthy

Just a slight correction being a spelling thread it is "d" and not "p". Otherwise 9 out of 10.
