EGR valves on a 2.2 Deisel Saloon 2007

Hoping I can get some info from anyone please. My jag runs sweet when its working ( just like a jag should ), but trying to get it started is a nightmare . I've replaced 4 no glow plugs because the originals didn't even look white. They were all sooted up and one of them looked brand new , like it had never fired up . So I came back on to the forum to do my research and I found a couple of posts referring to the EGR valve and to quote " hit it with a hammer ". My question is this. Has anyone else had bother with the EGR in a 2.2 or do they know what could be causing my difficult starting. I think I've eliminated the glow plug relay because I am still getting 12v delivered to the glow plugs at the right time, although I did disconnect it and reconnect . Any help would be greatly appreciated . (122000 miles)

Thanks Payno. Yes hard to start in the morning. If I've given it a good run it starts the second morning , although its a bit lumpy for a minute or two. If I leave the car for more than two days it will not start !! Also it starts fine when warm

This could be a fuel pressure problem as once started the pressure will hold but when left for a long time the pressure is dropping off you just need to figgur out why its dropping off
The easiest place to start looking is the fuel filter to see if its blocked after that you need to look at the injectors and fuel pumps a competent Jag specialist will have the right equipment to check these for you

After having replaced the Glowplugs, cleaned the EGR and manifold, the car would still not start. My mechanic had to leave the car for a couple of days ,to let him get on with clearing a backlog of cars. We decided the best course of action was to get an technical diagnosis on the car from another local specialist. On booking the appointment with the technician , he suggested we look at a seal on the back of the fuel pump ( at the engine end),as there is always a risk that these can blow and cause lack of pressure in the fuel delivery system. Lo and behold we discovered an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket which was causing oil to run down the side of the engine onto a sensor on the fuel pump. The mechanic removed the sensor and cleaned it all out. Reconnected and the old girl burst into life, and is still starting from cold the last few days I've had the car back.

    Just shows you . !!!
