Driver's vent mashing on dashboard - normal?!

So picked this car up 5 weeks ago.

The driver's side vent mashes on the leather dashboard above it when it opens and closes, making a creaking noise.

Is that normal? (Poor show if it is.) I've tried coercing the materials apart using a plastic mobile phone disassembly tool, but it doesn't seem like anything particularly wants to move.

How can I solve it, other than smearing lard on it? (Other lubricants are available.)

    Current car:
2016 XF R-S 2.0d InControl Touch Pro, nothing special about it at all.

    Driving History:
    2015 Merc SLK 2.0d
    2001 S-Type 3.0
    1998 XK8 4.0
    1997 Mazda MX6 2.4 V6
    1993 Mazda MX5 1.8 V6
    2008 Lotus Elise 1.8 VVTI
    1991 Celica GT4 2.0 Turbo
    1996 Nissan 100NX 1.6 NA
    1995 Kia Pride 1.3 NA

    I think that's all...

Poorly put together. Best get it to the dealer.
    Certainly not normal.
