If it's the 4.0 then it's an interference engine so major damage may well have occurred if a tensioner let go. Inspection vital.

    Absolutely, Lost One.

Funnily enough my daughter did that in her first car.

She put in a whole 4 litre container of oil at a petrol station without dipping.

Luckily someone spotted her doing it and got the the extra oil out for her. Phew!

She was half laughing and half in tears when she eventually told me. "Uh... Dad... I've got something to tell you!"

She had thought the engine would somehow stop taking oil when the correct level was reached.

I chuckled for a long while. But only because the car wasn't damaged.

I guess 2 litres or so extra wouldn't hurt anyway since the level had been on the minimum mark to begin with and that's usually over a litre.

This is the secondary tensioner removed today. Does this look like a complete unit or are bit broken off ?
Not sure what it looked like at the start.

well thanks for all your help guys it was the secondary timing chain tensioner that was causing that awful noise.
    all done now.
luckily it had not jumped a tooth on the timing.

Glad it got sorted for you without any serious engine damage. The question that remains now is whether the lower, or primary timing tensioners have been dealt with on your engine.
