Improving the cabin noise on the X type

As per the title, that’s the plan at least.
The X type has always seemed to be a little on the noisy side, or at least noisier than I’d like and enough to offend Mrs C’s delicate ears lol, so I’m trying to see what’s achievable, without going too mad.

I started the day and cleaned her inside n out first of all windows cleaned, tyres blacked etc and she was looking pretty good, time to make a start.

The starting point is to see where we’re at obviously, to that end I completed a few brief runs today for a few miles to set a base line, here’s what I found.
I'd initially checked db readings and it was coming back at around 56db min, 83db maximum with an average of 76db, see chart below for comparative db ratings

Please see below a few short videos, these are of a time when I did something similar with my XJ X358 to reduce cabin noise

I added extra add on door seal. The videos show how easily the piece of A4 paper can be removed prior to the extra seal, little to no effort was required. After adding the seal you can quite clearly see the amount of effort required to overcome the seal / grip and the paper in fact tears before it will budge.
This will be my first step….

    Pre door seal fitted

    Door seal in place

    After door seal fitted

The scenario was the same, A4 paper removed easily prior to installation and would rip / fail before coming out afterwards. The screenwash was topped up ( empty AGAIN ) and Redex fuel treatment added whilst also filling the empty tank ( AGAIN )

I took her for a wee run afterwards, same roads, same speeds etc and db levels coming back at 75db max with an average of 68db, so an improvement of sorts that I *thought" I could hear, but the acid test will be Mrs C's ears of course.

As it happens I told her what I'd done and asked her to check on the next few journeys and let me know, she called on way to work and said that she noticed a definite difference and was really pleased, so that's half the battle I suppose.

    More to follow...

I've ordered some sound deadening material from the sound specialists at "The sound deadening" shop

Aptly named I thought, I guess they didn't think too hard before coming up with that one?

Anyhow, after looking for a while I decided on a 2 step process...
This will involve the installation of vibro damping material, I've opted for 2mm thick sheets by Silentcoat, see video below

After the damping material is added I'll follow up with some acoustic closed cell foam at 10mm thick, this will partially absorb any noises that get through and lessen them further

    Here's what I ordered...

It's the boot and specifically the wheel well area that'll be getting this treatment, then of course there is the "boot floor" and mat on top, so should really help to quieten the tinny sound from the boot area and help lessen tyre roar from the rear area generally

This should be here Monday and so will be able to tackle fairly soon hopefully....

I don't plan to do the door interiors, but it is a consideration, we'll see how it goes once these next few steps are completed. I definitely won't be taking out the headliner to add sound deadening or removing the interior to do the floor, although perhaps if it was a seriously long term potential vehicle I might.

Lastly I will be looking to order some spray on acoustic material called Boom mat, the idea is to remove the wheels and add 2 or 3 coats to each wheel arch area, this should have the effect of helping to lessen tyre noise

It's an interesting experiment and not overly costly.
The add on door seal was around £30.00
    Sound deadening material £80.00
4 tins of Boom mat would be £80.00

    Around £190.00 all in

Hi Stephen, sorry my mistake, please see below details of the add on door seal

Again below the video of the seal in place on the door frame, it doesn't really look out of place unless you're looking for it.

It may be that a replacement original door seal would do the trick, but I find no real fault with the original.
An original genuine replacement can be around £50 so doing 4 doors becomes expensive, as opposed to this £30 fix

It's readily available on Ebay / Amazon and has the same 3M self adhesive backing as used on car emblems and the like, properly prepared it'll stick and you'll have no issues.

Check with them but choose an option is for spray on

" For hard to reach places (inside door panels, rear quarters etc) there is also a spray on foam which dries to touch in approx 20 minutes "

the next step is active noise cancelling using the stereo
I just saw an Audi driver using his indicators correctly on the motorway. Twice. Should I report the vehicle as stolen?
