Meaning seems to depend on context....

If you're waiting to pull out from at a junction it means 'I'm letting you pull out'.
If used at an oncoming car after dark it means 'You're still on full beam you git'
If used on the car in front after dark it means 'Your foglights are on but it's not foggy, you cretin'.
If used at an oncoming car in the day it can mean 'Warning, Plod about'.

So if you flash an oncoming car, then as well as annoying the innocent driver in front of you, it's probably taken as a warning first more than 'Hello friend, look my car is the same as yours, is this not truly amazing?'
    Absolutely agree.

Which is why (if I identify the oncoming car in time!) I wave, but don't flash - at X150 Jaguar XKs/XKRs if I'm driving my XK, or at Maxda MX5s (particularly Mk3s) if I'm driving my Mk3 MX5.

It would have been useful that once, but I'm not really in favour of everyone filming everyone else all the time; it reminds me of Ceausescu's Romania where the population were encouraged to spy on each other. Not healthy I think.

What would happen to a rear-mounted camera when you lowered the roof?

I had a wave yesterday, for a couple of miles heading up the A134 out of Colchester I was followed by a lovely '58 plate XK in green. must have looked and sounded lovely for the various pedestrians. Eventually had to turn off and both waved at they continued up the road.

My wife had an NC MX-5 for a few years. When she first got it she'd often come back home and say "I don't get why other MX-5 drivers often wave or flash their lights at me?" Had to explain that it's not just a car, it's a way of life etc. but it was a bit lost on her. Still miss that car though, was the most reliable car either of us have ever had. Only had to replace the two front anti-roll bar droplinks besides normal service items in the time she had it.

I think the Jeep Wrangler garners the highest wave numbers - anything else is a distant second!

I don’t know about that: I “wave” at quite a few BMW and Audi’s, too!

Is there not a handbag analogy you could make...? If Louis Vuitton made cars etc...
