shocks for a while so one new one new unbroken shock will match the other one reasonably well.
At £240 each, I shall just change the one.
If a shock was broken on my 20 year old 80000 miler, I would change both.
    Thanks for the advice though.

I had a really annoying rattle just the same as this and it was the bonnet latch. Grab the bonnet in the corner next to the windscreen and wiggle it up and down. If it has the slightest play that could be your issue. I re adjusted it to take the slight play out and it never rattled again

My rattle still happened with the bonnet open!
Still waiting for new shock to arrive.

I'm not sure my mechanic ever heard it or knew what i was talking about. He looked at the suspension over and over, and the problem was never found. It drove me batty. My current 2009 XJ doesn't do it, thankfully, but every time I drive in my in-laws' 2004 XJ, I'm reminded of the 15 years I suffered with that stupid rattle in my 1997 and 2002 cars. I'll bet you're chasing the same damn noise. Sending good wishes that the new shock fixes it.

(I should point out that the sound was like the top bolt and washer of the strut assembly was several threads loose, and that the strut was just flopping around when going over bumps. Of course, this wasn't the case, but that's what it sounded like. On my in-laws' car, we ripped out the Jag air suspension and put in Arnott replacements just a few years ago. The noise started about a year after that installation.)
The stupid rattle totally ruins the drive for me because the whole time I am driving I am thinking about what is causing the noise rather than enjoying the drive.
I am so looking forward to shutting it up.

I feel for you. Its like the smoke alarm in the middle of the night. A solitary 'beep' every minute or so. You end up waiting for it but dont want to get out of bed to remove the battery. Think your heading in the right direction. Something catching or moving on the strut/spring. When you remove it there may well be a mark where its been rattling against something.

My money is on a broken internal rebound spring. Just borrowed some spring compressors in readiness.

How do you readjust the bonnet Big D? I have a rattle which can be heard on just about any bump which fits that description. It's never got worse and it's only road noise that drowns it out at higher speeds.

There are two bonnet stops on the tops of each inner wings and two just behind the bumper that the bonnet rests on. They have rubber tops and they are adjustable by screwing them up and down on their bases. They might be a bit tight to turn at first.
Have you tried driving slowly with the bonnet open to confirm whether it is the bonnet or not?
Does it sound like a dice in a plastic cup?

    Good info thanks.

The sound is like a dull "plastic on plastic" sound and will do so when going over the slightest bump. I have pinpointed it as being somewhere around the back of the glove compartment so your bonnet stop idea gives me hope. Probably needs to be screwed up to get rid of any gap there which might be causing the rattle.
