The sound is like a dull "plastic on plastic" sound and will do so when going over the slightest bump. I have pinpointed it as being somewhere around the back of the glove compartment so your bonnet stop idea gives me hope. Probably needs to be screwed up to get rid of any gap there which might be causing the rattle.
These rattles are very annoying. My XKR had another clicking sound that came from the A post which turned out to be a poor join between the 3 metal parts the A pillar is made from. I little bend and some superglue shut it up permanently.
Once the rattle can be produced with the car stationary its easy to find the rattle. I bought a Steelmans Chassis Ear kit which has 6 microphones that can be clipped around the car to pinpoint the rattle. I also have a mic on a stick for waving around which is connected to a pair of headphones.
    Good luck silencing the rattle.

A Steelmans Chassis Ear Kit with 6 microphones!! Now that is commitment!

I have a little rattle around the A pillar which I reckon is the glass window hitting something. Only does it at around 50mph and is on the driver's side therefore very hard to trace!

On the subject of rattles, I did have a vibration coming through the car at around 1500 rpm (was ok above or below 1500). Turned out to be a hairline crack in the exhaust which was soldered by the mechanic for £25 and sorted out. Worth bearing in mind.

Here it is in its correct location.

I cannot believe that the floating shock absorber can create the sort of rattle I am chasing though despite this which is worth a read:

I think I will take a saw to the shock this morning and investigate the internals for something loose or broken whilst waiting for the new shock to arrive. UPDATE. I have been advised not to attempt this by my learnéd pal Gary and Bilstein service dept.

If the rattle is on the drivers side, can't you just remove the A post cover and feel around whilst driving? Mine was on the passenger side which was impossible to reach and my partner diid not share my enthusiasm to locate the source. I eventually found it one day by slightly bending the A pillar whilst parked on a slope which produced the clicking noise for me to locate.

New shock arrived and was duly fitted so I tentatively went out at 17.30 to attend a Supercar Soirée in Essendon which is only 5 miles from me.
The car did feel slightly different to drive in a good way and I am pleased to report that
    THE RATTLE HAS GONE.

It has been good week for me, despite the rain. On Monday I finally sold the XK and yesterday I stopped the irritating rattle. Hooray.

Jag seem solid now and is a joy to drive. It didn't even rattle over small speed bumps last night at the Soirée.

Glad to hear that the rattle has gone, and thanks for reporting the outcome!
    _ _ _

Do I understand that as well as curing the rattle, fitting a new damper has made the car feel better in other ways, too?

My car has done around 120,000 and somehow doesn't seem to feel (handle or ride) quite as well as I seem to remember the identical (and very impressive) demo car I drove 10 years or so ago. Do these adjustable dampers progressively deteriorate (mechanically/hydraulically) as they age, even if the electronics check out OK?

I'm wondering whether, if and when I get some worn suspension bushes (or rather, the suspension arms) changed, to get new dampers fitted at the same time.

Good on you, mate! Now I *really* wish I had the tenacity that you did when my cars were making that damn noise!!
I have God, family, friends, and my Jaguars. All I need now is more garage space.
