    General warning...

Just avoid all diesels since all post-2006 models have a DPF (Destruction Preset Fuse).

I'm serious, we just lost another S Type through oil dilution and it's not just Jags and not just S Types.

Petrol models are fine, no DPF, but just look out for fault codes, rust and subframe mounts and suspension and steering wear on all models.

It turns out that a large number of recent cars are crash-repairs, insurance write-offs repaired and sold at full value with no mention of their crash or other history.

    You can't trust anyone.

Get the dealer to scan and tell you all fault codes.
He should fix them all before you collect the car and indemnify you against any codes for at least 3 months or you could be buying a dead duck.

My Mercedes A160 ran great for 6 weeks before coming up with a gearbox fault that can't be reset.

These machines are all computer controlled now, not much more DIY left in them. Brakes oil and tyres and filters is about all.

Thank you for your detailed reply,
I have no intention to buy diesel since I will be only doing 5000 miles a year so diesel means trouble anyway on this little mileage as was explained to me.
I will be buying the car in Germany or France since I am based in Slovakia joining me will be a friend who is a dealer,Will it be good to have one of those hand scanner or should I go to an official Jag dealership to have the car scanned?

It's best to have your own scanner while you own the car, otherwise you will need to go to the dealer or specialist to get them read and trust the dealer every time the light comes on.

You need a specific Jaguar LandRover scanner not just a generic one, or the codes won't be read or will give incorrect meanings.

But before you buy the car, get the dealer to tell you all error codes and to fix all of them and give you that 3 month guarantee that he will fix all errors in that time.

Sorry that it's like this these days but really there is little you can do yourself on these newer cars, and little that general mechanics can do.

A good scanner is the icarsoft i930, this read everything on a petrol model. I would personally not buy one from ebay because you may end up with a Chinese clone.

Check all of the rubber pipes especially the turret on the upper radiator pipe. It is connected to the expansion bottle.

If you can get underneath see if the radiator is sagging.

The sills are plastic cover which may be hiding a lot of problems with the actual sills.

Make sure the air conditioning is working by running through some these tests.I

Don't let the dealer add a price for navi it is out of date and cannot be updated.

Make sure that the gearbox has had an oil change it it is zf.

Buy one that is post first facelift. 2002.5 most of the problems sorted out.

IF YOU DONT LIKE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE CAR. WALK AWAY!

Don't let your heart rule your head.

Will you be looking for cars in Germany ?

    .

    Urrrmmm...

    Psstt!!...

    Ducmon...

It's a 2013 XF type Shaguar that our friend is considering!!

WHERE DID YOU LEAVE YOUR SPECS?

That's why I didn't fill in any S Type blanks.

The iCarSoft i930 is not the current model, the iCarSoft LR V2.0 is their latest.

But since some members said they had problems with that on S Types, it's best to ask in the XF FORUM (2010-2015): https://www.jaguarforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61

There may well be newer better scanners of other brands which work well on XFs, I don't know.
