    DPF active regeneration indicator

    A common thread with posts relating to DPFs is knowing when the active regeneration has commenced so that the driver can continue running the car for the 20 minutes or so duration of the process. It is often mentioned that it would be useful to have an alarm indication for this, but as yet, JLR think that this is unnecessary.

    So I'd like to bounce an idea off you technical guys, that might be an inexpensive way to achieve this. I've just got myself an ELM 327 mini unit (£25, but there are cheaper ones out there) and I've purchased the Torque Pro app for my Smartphone (£2.95). Its all connected up and I'm pleased with the set up. I've now got a coolant temperature indication which is another item JLR believe we don't need. There unfortunately is no sensor pick up for the DPF temperature, but I'm wondering if the Manifold Air Pressure sensor (which CAN be read via the ELM327) would give me an indication of DPF regeneration? It normally shows 99-100kPa which is absolute pressure, i.e. ambient air pressure. Would this drop somewhat when the extra fuel was being used during DPF regeneration? There is a means of setting an alarm on the MAP indication, and this just might solve the problem.

    What do you think?

    I admire your thinking I just wish there was a button I could press when I knew I was going to run at a steady speed to ensure full cleaning. My XJ is on 144k and I have just had the Dpf taken off and chemically cleaned and replaced, everything seems fine at present. The work was carried out by The Jag specialist at Doncaster who sent the DPF away to be cleaned, much cheaper than a new DPF and also less than getting a second hand DPF fitted.

    This is only for info. I picked up this knowledge on a Vauxhall forum that I use. (This was on a Vauxhall Insignia)

    Someone there discovered that when an active regen was being carried out by the ecu there was an electrical load put on the alternator by the rear window demister and heated mirrors being activated without the dash tell-tale being illuminated. (I don't know why)

    They carried out a mod where a feed taken from the heated mirror supply was used to operate a small warning lamp installed somewhere on the dash which in turn illuminated when an active regen was taking place.

    I wonder if any of our jags do something like that

    I'm coming round to the idea that removal of the DPF might be the best long term plan. On the plus side there would be no worries on destruction of the engine through fuel dilution (I've had to change engine oil twice because of this. Perhaps someone less attentive would have had an expensive repair pending). Also I need not plan for an eventual replacement of the DPF when the ash level reaches critical levels. Intuitively it would appear to me that the very presence of a restriction in the exhaust system is not a good idea for engine efficiency, and my Kia and Disco 2 Td5 work very well without a DPF.
    On the negative side, there is the certainty of an MOT fail if it is clear that the DPF is not present. As I understand, the removal procedure will not be visible during any routine inspection, and the exhaust pollutant levels are little changed during any test carried out. Absence of a DPF could of course be verified if the standard Jaguar ECU diagnostic equipment is used, but then again MOT test centres would require to have diagnostic equipment suitable for all makes and marques, which I think is unlikely...…. And of course there is the small issue of personal conscience.
    So I'm thinking hard on this one...….

    My DPF was removed to be cleaned only and then replaced after cleaning , so all legal and compliant with MOT and con and use regs. if i get another 144k miles before i have to get it done again i will be a happy chap .
