They are still in t'boot and perhaps will remain there in case jobsworth plod pulls me over?
The tricky bit will be keeping them looking in another direction while your passenger sneaks round and fits them...

'I'm sure these plates were illegal when I pulled you over...'
'Sorry officer you must have imagined it'

I don't believe that one's been tested. I can think of some interesting scenarios involving Perverting the Course of Justice

...an interesting situation may arise if the "illegal" plates have a different Reg Mark.

    Namely:

Perverting the course of justice can be any of three acts:

    1) Fabricating or disposing of evidence
    2) Intimidating or threatening a witness or juror
    3) Intimidating or threatening a judge

Which one of these would I have committed??

Having been a magistrate for a few years I prefer to keep my trap shut on legal matter unless I know what I'm talking about

I was thinking specifically of the fitst one - if the 'other' plate is a non-legal one, being as a lot of non-legal plates are specifically devised to be less visible to automated devices such as cameras, then you could be seen to be fabricating evidence to confuse or distract the law.

in the same vein as motorcyclists covering their plates with their hand or the original cases of people warning of speed camer vans by flashing ttheir lights (before the specific provision was added)
