    Auto boxes whilst stationary

If the car is left in 'D' whilst e.g sitting at lights for a short time, is this mechanically detrimental in any way?

*EDIT* I must clarify! Wherever possible/practicable, I move to Park or at the very least Neutral when I stop. My OP was purely out of curiosity....

Most traffic lights we have are equipped with a visible timer. (good idea in my book). If anything above 30 secs. or so is displayed I slip into neutral and set the park brake.

It goes against my grain to have all that fluid churning around inside the gearbox trying to creep the car along, but being held back against the brake.

Not as far as I'm aware Winchester

That said, like a few others, if it looks like it may be some time, then I personally shift into neutral

    Not to the car.

But it's a nuisance to the driver behind having your rear brake lights dazzling at night.

Agree, but also agree that it's best to put into neutral than Park. In the albeit unlikely you got stuffed up the ar5e there is less likelihood of gear box damage when in Neutral (or so I read somewhere. Here I think).
