What can cause a rough idle & white smoke

I've got a 2004 XJ8 with 148K miles that started to idle roughly. My mechanic, who is a certified Jag mechanic, feels confident it's a head gasket issue. He didn't do any testing on it. He said he could tell by the smell of the white smoke. I had a friend stand behind the car and when I revved the engine the smoke stopped. It doesn't go through coolant either.
Thoughts, suggestions? I love this car, but I can't keep it if there's something seriously wrong with it.
    Many thanks for anyone's feedback!

A blocked crankcase breather can cause smoke but I would get the coolant tested for hydrocarbons just in case it is the head gasket
