    xk8/xkr.

Hi all, I am looking to buy a xk8 or xkr, 1996-2000. It will be my first Jaguar and am hoping someone might give me a few tips as to what I should be wary of when buying. Also, if any one knows of a reputable dealer/garage in the Shropshire area.
    Cheers.

    Hi,
I have owned 2 1997 XK8'S and sold my last one only a month ago. My first was a low ownership and was extremely comfortable and reliable with only minor problems with water ingress into the headlights causing condensation. No matter what I tried I never fully got rid of it. I never suffered any of the electrical problems that many experience, but I replaced the battery as a matter of course when the window drop required to open the doors kept needing ho be reset. HOWEVER......my second one was a different story, it started exhibiting problems 2 weeks after buying it......stability control failure, engine fault and transmission fault error messages in the speedo display. It would not downshift when accelerating from about 30mph and would go into a funny mode feeling like it was only working on 4 cylinders and tickover at 1500rpm. It had me guessing for a few weeks and went through a number of tests, diags etc. In the end I sent the ECU to a specialist that knows XK8'S well and it was diagnosed as having a number of faults which were basically age related, so I would say any intermittent or electrical anomalies look towards the ECU and be prepared to shell out £300 !!
I was well worth it as it cured so many other minor niggles (such as having to crank the engine for 5-6 secs before starting - post fix it went to 1-2 secs...
I love these cars but electrical probs are widespread and look to sills, floorpans and wheel arches for rust problem.
