    Sat-Nav Update Disc

Starting a fresh thread with a clear, appropriate title, so that anyone who needs the information will be able to find it easily.

The name removed were a good source of a 2020 Sat-Nav update disc (about £30) for my car (a 2006 [actually a '56' reg] 4.2 litre XK):

They will (to their credit!) want to check carefully that your car will accept it before they will be happy to sell you one. Was fine for me - after they had checked its suitability, they sent disk swiftly, it arrived safely, I removed existing old (original?) disc, inserted new one, and it just ... worked.

Maps not quite as fully up-to-date as Google Maps themselves but generally OK.

Thanks to MarkyM who recommended the shop in this thread:

This post does not really need a reply. I just posted it, as I said, with a clear, explicit post title which should make the above information easier for others to find.

It's amazing, in thee times when anything more than 6 months old is obsolete, that a 2006 car can read a 2020 disk!

Judging by their website, the chances of them being an authorised distributor is pretty slim.

Which is why it's £30 and not £171. Sir can patronise an authorised distributor if he wishes; the plus side of splashing an extra £141 is, err, well, there won't be a queue

How on Earth does anyone ever manage to try to to justify £171?

I bought a cracking good brand new, unlocked, Motorola Moto G6 Play for a lot less than that and I can download a choice of completely free, always-kept-fully-up-to-date-for-ever sat-nav apps for it. And I get a free smart phone (which will do pretty much anything some £1k iPhone will do) thrown in as a bonus. Add 99p for a Three "321" pay-as-you-go SIM card and you're fully sorted.

I bought new discs last year from that company, wanted to be prepared for a trip in the Alps. I prefer using the built in stuff, because it's there, and maybe safest to use while driving. I also bring my old TomTom and of course my phone. When built in can't help me, I use TomTom. When even that fails to find it, I use phone.

I’m using the last official updated discs but also use Waze mapping on the phone which is light years ahead of the jag system it gives real time of what’s up ahead, won’t go on a trip without using both.
