    Appalling Radio

On my old diesel estate, the radio reception was great. This one's rubbish. Crackly - poor signal.

Has anyone had this problem on a petrol estate and if so - how did you fix it?

There have been a few problems with the aerial connections failing under the roof lining at the base of the device - there have been recent posts about that (incl some pics) which may assist - I think forum member prisoners did some stuff which I know you can find.

If you are going rummaging in there between the roof and headlining I strongly recommend some latex/vinyl gloves!
The back of the headlining is a fibreboard type material and it will leave you itching like mad if you have nothing on your hands - I found this out the hard way after replacing the aerial on my estate!!

    Re: Appalling Radio

Update: Seems better now, but I need to drive around to test the "blind spots" I'd encountered.

    Here's what I did...

    Remove the black rubber seal:

Remove the two side panels. Be careful of these little beggars as they're very brittle when old (like me!!):

    Remove the dog guard clips:

When removing the head lining, be careful as there's a big clip holding the middle up. It's a beggar to get off and I just separated it from the head lining. It actually moves towards the back of the car.

The antenna connects into two of these (black with pink plug, and the red/blue):

Undo the 22mm nut holding the base to the roof...

    and remove

Undo the two small phillips screws to expose the innards of the base:

My particular problem was these broken contacts which I've soldered back on:

Reverse the procedure for refitting, then enjoy your radio...
