HOW TO CHANGE YOUR DASHBOARD LOOK (WITH PHOTOS)

    Hi

Well after my "epic fail" of trying to spray my dashboard "piano black" i was introduced to the idea of "carbon fibre vinyl" by westville (thank you kind sir)

so heres my how too change the look of your dashboard

tools i used was a craft knife (stanley blade) a credit card to smooth out air bubbles and a hairdryer to stretch the vinyl round tricky curves

right, heres my poor attempt of a spray which i need to cover

heres the carbon fibre vinyl i ordered from ebay

i cut just anuff to cover the lot

after peeling of the back and sticking over the dashboard i cut some slits in the two main holes

i rounded and smoothed out the outer edges first using the hairdryer

then i rounded and smoothed the inner hole (its a bit tricky but with a few well placed slits and the hairdryer to soften the vinyl, it will be ok)

heres what the reverse side looks like half way through

a few swear words later and some trimming on the reverse side

here it is with the air vents scewed back on

BRFORE YOU CONTINUE PLEASE DICONECT YOUR BATTERY AND LEAVE OR 30 MINS TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE
AS YOU DO NOT WANT THE AIRBAG TO GO OFF IN YOUR FACE WITH TINKERING ABOUT !!!

right, on to the real "EPIC FAIL" lol i really screwed the spay job on this, as i never tried to remove the airbag cover when i sprayed it lol

this time i removed the airbag cover to apply the vinyl but still left it attached to the straps

    this went on quite easy

and then i added the other bit

    heres a contrast lol

JOB DONE !!! and im sooooooo pleased i have finally covered up my spray job lol

Looks really good! Have you considered doing the centre console to match?

The photos were quite forgiving of your paint job!! But the new look is really good; very pro. How about the door inserts? Were they wood/piano black and if so is there a plan for them? Also, I note you masked the airbag light for painting. What now? Does the light shine through the new covering or are you going to have to cut a hole in it?

Nice job mate! Can see why you wanted to cover up that paint job

I would do the centre console too, although that could be a real tricky task. Certainly would do the ashtray lid to match it up!

you read my mind Tony <----- (great name)

heres how to do it .......... sorry about the photo quality (used my iphone camera)

i unclipped the front plastic cover

measured out a peace of carbon fibre

and before i could blink it was done

Then i started on the stereo surround

i done this bit by bit to save vinyl

and again, in no time it was done

as i said before, i didnt need to do the door trim as they were originally black

Good job well done. I was toying with the idea of doing that myself and seeing how easy you did it has made my mind up. I'm puting a car PC into mine shortly so may as well do it all at once. I saw this on another site on an X-Type and the guy also covered up the heater control panel and the hazard switch trim which makes it even more striking.

That looks excellent, you should be able to do the top section of the console too, it's just a push fit, the heater facia may be a little more complex tho.

How did you remove your main drivers side dash .. mine creaks and i's like to pack it out or something. ...

    Real nice mate!

Really looking the complete set now. The thing l'd do next is the plastic gear surround Should be a pretty straight forward job that one.

I'm definitely having a go at this soon!
