    RETRO FIT CRUISE,,,, UPDATE!!

    IT WORKS!!!!

I had been led to believe that the retro fitting of cruise control on the X-type (AWD models) was nigh-on impossible due to Jaguar blocking the upgrade on their software systems. The S-type was reported to be a plug in and play job however.

Nevertheless, I collected the switchgear and wiring needed, fitted them to the car, went out in it and the cruise control works perfectly. No need for £100 worth of diagnostic re-mapping, no need to try to get around the software block. No.

The X-type, or at least my X-type 3.0 AWD, is plug in and play. Cost me about £70 in total.

All you need is the steering wheel switch, and the wire to link it to the audio controls on the other spoke (2004MY onwards). A second brake pedal switch, which is the cruise deactivation switch and the small wiring harness that links the two brake pedal switches to the throttle and the main loom.
Plug them in and off you go. It's as easy as that.

I didn't even have to take the airbag off to fit the switches, it can be done by removing the cowling and loosening the back cover to the steering wheel. You will also need to drill a hole in this wheel cover to access the allen head bolts holding the steering wheel switches on.

The two switches (wheel and pedal) were sourced from Ebay, the elusive wiring harness (each model is different) was bought from b12mct, a member of this forum. Thanks for your help Bruce. I would recomend you PM him for any X-type salvage parts.

    Here's to effortless motoring.

£100 for diagnostics?? never had any diagnostics
Well done, yours still cost more than mine did though to get up and running

You won't wipe the smile off my face that easy Buck, but well done on the price. I blame inflation.

You said that you had to pay to get them working? That's the bit that I don't get. Mine just worked straight away. Maybe the ECUs changed at some point to allow the plug in and play?

I'm very pleased with my achievements, £100 was the quoted price from somewhere near me, I didn't do any shopping around. No need now though!!

Soooooo nice to have cruise control again. I've missed it.

    Re: RETRO FIT CRUISE,,,, UPDATE!!

The secret at the time I had mine done was how to get it working with the switches on as no info was available on this, with it not being a Jag upgrade dealers were unaware
Now everyone knows so no reason for AWD owners not to be able to upgrade themselves
    Excellent!

I thought I did this in the first post!!

Obviously not. Bearing in mind I did this to a 2004 3.0 auto.

    You will need;
A cruise control (speed control) switch for your steering wheel + the small wire that plugs in the back of it.
A new cruise deactivation switch for the brake pedal. (it's a green coloured plunger switch).
The wiring harness for the pedals. (Original one plugs into brake light switch, throttle and main loom). Get in there have a look. You need one with an extra spur to the brake pedal. Old harness will have a big green multi-pin plug (loom), a thin flat black plug (throttle) and a 2-pin plug (brake light switch). You need a harness with all those things + an additional 2-pin plug for the cruise deactivation switch. (You can fit 2.5 harness to 3.0, as long as it's auto to auto. The manual version will have three spurs, each with a 2-pin plug, the third one is for the clutch pedal cruise deactivation switch. Don't fit a manual harness to an auto and vice versa.)

    The wheel.
    1. Remove cowling from steering column to assist access.
    2. Remove 4 screws that hold steering wheel back cover on (the cover will only move a tiny bit then, but it's enough).
    3. Locate each bolt that retain the blank plate and audio controls (one on each top spoke). Drill pencil sized hole in back cover behind each bolt.
    4. Undo both bolts being careful not to drop them into the centre of the steering wheel where the airbags is.
    5. Remove blank plate (where cruise control switch should be).
    6. Plug in new wire to back of existing audio controls (there is a spare socket for this) and feed wire over top of airbag, just under the cover.
    7. Postion Cruise control switch in place of old blank plate and plug in to new wire from audio switch.
    8. Re-fit both swicthes using holes drilled as before.
Steering wheel complete. The switch will now light up at night.

The brake brake pedal and wiring.
    1. Get upside down on the floor and climb into the driver's footwell.
    2. Find the metal bracket that the brake pedal is bolted too. (This will require the removal of a cosmetic panel)
    3. You will see a black coloured plunger switch connected to this bracket. This is the brake light switch. Next to the switch will be another hole for another switch.
    4. Attach your new green coloured cruise deactivation switch by bayonet fitting into this hole. Ensure that the pedal operates the plunger on both switches.
    5. Unplug the wiring harness that connects the brake light switch to the throttle and the main loom (main loom is the large green multi-pin plug)
    6. Remove old harness and fit new one in the same fashion. The additional plug will be for the cruise deactivation switch. (plugs are different, you cannot get it wrong).
    7. Drive the car. The cruise control will work now, that's all I did anyway.

    Howzat!
