    Starter Motor

    Hi

I've posted previously about a clattery type noise when trying to start my 2.0d, engine does not turn over just the horrible sound of (presumably) the starter motor teeth not fully engaging on the flywheel. This has been intermittent for a month or so, but today it took 8 attempts to before the car would start. Very worrying.

I've search around and found the following post which talks about clutch/flywheel replacement. However I had a new clutch and flywheel only 14k ago and I'm a very gentle driver. So I'm convinced it's actually the starter motor which is on its last legs.
    viewtopic.php?f=14&t=44664&p=403877&hilit=starter+ motor#p403877

I want to get the job done asap in case its causing damage to the flywheel on these failed attempts to start.

Has anyone replaced the starter motor themselves and is it a big job or majorly expensive?

    Thanks

From JTIS (having raised the car first) -
    Detach the support bar.
    Remove the support bar.
Detach the starter motor solenoid cover.
Disconnect the starter motor electrical connector.
Disconnect the starter motor solenoid electrical connector.
Remove the starter motor rear retaining bolt.
Remove the starter motor front retaining bolt.
    Remove the starter motor.
Seems straightforward enough although cramped I would think - anyone else got any experience (pics) for a How To?

    Re: Starter Motor

I also found the following post on how to remove the starter motor -
    viewtopic.php?f=14&t=27560

I also read that you can access the starter motor from above by removing the battery and it's holder.

I found the link to the complete Jaguar Tech info (JTIS) document - quit a meaty download..
(Edit: Link removed for copyright reasons)

I assume that whichever approach you take, the battery must always be disconnected first?

    Re: Starter Motor

    Hi

    I am really struggling

I can't seem to locate the starter on my 2.0d - so far I have removed the battery and container and have a pretty clear view of the passenger side of the engine bay now but for the life of me I can't see where the starter is located?

I've tried the logical thing of tracing the positive battery leads thinking one must head for the starter but can't see it.

I've got the JTIS diagram but suspect it's for a 2.0 petrol as it doesn't seem to relate to the 2.0d

    Can anyone help?

    Re: Starter Motor

Oops!! There seems to have been some confusion about which engine we're talking about here! Jim's advice about going in through the top might be a possibility, but the earlier quoted JTIS instructions for the starter removal are for the petrol, not diesel engine.

The motor is on the radiator side of the engine ie, at the front, immediately below the power steering pump. Jaguar removal method is from underneath, and begins by removing the complete air deflector to give access

Removal instructions, with pics, are as exactly as posted in the ck_uk post at http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=27560

    Re: Starter Motor

I knew I'd seen that before, losing my marbles it seems.

Actually, ref diagram 6 which shows the electrical connections mounted on a bracket - mine has one bolt missing and the other two bolts are not even hand-tight! Someone's been playing...

I'll let you know the outcome in due course

    Thanks again

I don't think that was me
The link I repaired above does seem to be very comprehensive

    Re: Starter Motor

Oh my god why are things so difficult.

Removal of starter motor, Step 1 - Remove the air deflector (=stumbling block number 1)

I have managed to get some of the star-shaped bolts undone which hold the deflector in place underneath the front of the car, but at least half won't undo, they just turn but aren't going anywhere. So I removed the lower grill (harder than it should have been) to see if I could get access to the nuts behind, or whatever it is which these bolts fit into. No joy. So I am now faced with drilling them out I guess. This must be a common problem?

So far, two evenings of fading daylight after work spent sprawled underneath the front of the car, and a spanner has not even come near to the starter motor bolts yet!

All I want to do is get that starter motor out and see for myself the condition of the teeth etc. I want to understand the cause of the problem, simple as that. Just didn't expect it to be such a boar lake.

    To be continued...
