    Checklist for Rear Suspension Noises

First of all I’ve had a hell of a time getting my head round the terminology used, it seems the British, Americans, Australians, JEPC & JTIS all use different names for certain suspension parts…???

I've got a knocking sound coming from the rear, so before i throw a heap of cash at it & hope the problem is solved, i'm doing my homework learn from what others have done. The only problem is there are hundreds & hundreds of posts on this very subject...

To start off, here is a pic of the rear suspension, same for FWD & AWD, just there's a diff in there for the AWD's...

#1 Wheel knuckle (Hub Carrier) mounting bracket
    #2 Subframe mount bushing
    #3 Upper Control Arm
    #4 Shock
    #5 Spring
    #6 Front Lower Control Arm
#7 Stabiliser Bar Link / Anti-Roll Bar (ARB) Link / Drop Link
    #8 Subframe
#9 Stabiliser Bar / Anti-Roll Bar (ARB) / Sway Bar
    #10 Rear Lower Control Arm
    #11 Wheel Hub
    #12 Hub Carrier

Now obviously anywhere there is a bush or bolted joint is a source for noise; knock, clunk, squeak, creak, groan, rattle, what have you...

It seems the noises can be separated into two categories; Knocking or Squeaking (or whatever names you want to give them). After searching through a lot of posts on this and other forums, here’s a checklist to work though…

    Knocking
#1 ARB Bushes, as explained HERE
#2 ARB Link / Drop Link Mounting Bolts, as explained HERE
#3 Handbrake Cables, as explained HERE
#4 Rear Lower Control Arm Bushes, as explained by Goudy

    Squeaking
#1 Upper & Front & Rear Lower Control Arm bushes, as explained HERE
#2 Handbrake Cables, as explained HERE
#3 Shock mounting bushes, as explained by Goudy
#4 Spring mounting bushes, also worth a check.
    #5 Subframe bushes, though unlikely…?

Goudy mentions a lot of these things HERE

Anything else worth mentioning? If so please also include a link!

    Cheers!

Front Lower control arm is the best suspect, while under there check the shocky bottom eye bush, they sometimes loose the bonding, then the shocky knocks on the frame.

    Greetings from Malta!

I'm trying to cure a rear-suspension knock on a 2004 X Type diesel. My mechanic has found that the LHS bush connecting the rear lower control arm to the hub carrier needs replacing. (thats the bush found between parts 10 and 12 of the diagram you kindly shared). The problem is...we are uanble to identify the part, what it's called and which part is it...

I checked on the bearmach.com parts list, and honestly I am a bit lost...is it the Bush Rear Hub Carrier (rear) C2S14740??? The control arms comes with a bush fitted at the narrow end which is fixed to the rest of the chassis/suspension, but at the wider end (hub end), there is empty space...

Can anyone please help me out?

Thanks so much & warm regards

    John

The bush between 10 and 12 is this
    BUSH-HUB CARRIER
Known as the "hub carrier bush, rear"

This is someones answer to replacement, with a poly bush, but the original bush is readily available from the dealers, ebay, David Manners, British parts etc.
