Sounds like a broken scissor, probably repairable.

This is how I did mine - the 'cup' behind the open/lock lever needs to be gently prised away, then remove the two self-tappers underneath the little mat on the inside of the door handle. After that its just a case of easing the card away from the clips, the best way is to wind the window fully down ( or carefully lower it! ) and start from the top. Some plastic wedges would be handy because if you tug the card the clips will probably break. Almost all the clips are on the edge of the door, just two are nearer the centre.

My 2001 s type 3ltr S has just given me this same problem, can you specialists explain to me what the scissor mechanism is all about, how is it repaired, should I need to replace it are there pattern types you could recommend and where from, or is it a visit to the Jaguar stores?

Plentiful on ebay. Main dealer will want an arm and a leg!! Cable has either snapped or jumped off of a worn spool, quicker to replace the complete assembly.

Take a look and decide how worn or broken the parts are. One or other plastic slider goes brittle and breaks. I only had to replace one slider (I probably replaced both ...) in one window so far but I now have spares for a front and a back one for when the next one goes. Look up "regulator" and select the pre-facelift years and you will get an idea of all the options from just the sliders and pulley wheels, through cables to the complete assembly.:

    It's not a scissor it's a cable mech.

Not sure about prising away at the top firs either as they sit in a channel at the top IIRC ( will have a look when it's light)

I repaired one and it was a right X%$£%% , but I think I know the trick now which is to re-lace the cable but not over one of the end spools ( you can't get the bobbins in the drump if its fully laced) then ease the cable over the final spool like using a tyre leaver.

Removal and refitting is simple. The trim round the door release handle can be a real pain, no real trick to it either.
