Am I correct in thinking that this system is no use if you want to change the filter, because there's always fluid inside the box, on its way in or on its way out?

Not because there is fluid inside the box but because it's non invasive, you don't remove the sump, Jim.

If I remember correctly Richard recommends 40k miles as an interim fluid-only replacement, and sump (filter), Mechatronics seal & sleeve, bolts etc. replacement every 80k miles.

There is a slightly different procedure for changing the filter etc. I flush the system and then remove 4 litres of oil from the sump. The machine takes it out, no draining, and then the vehicle is switched off. When we drop the sump, there is less than half a litre in it, that keeps you dry. Sump pan etc. replaced, we then fill the sump, from the machine without starting it. Once filled, we exchange the full capacity, usually 9.5 to 10 litres. It does waste 4.5 litres of new oil, but we are dry, have managed the oil to keep the level correct, have used no syringes wasting valuable time, and guaranteed 99.9 % of the oil will be new when finished. And they change gear like new, quiet silky powerful shifting.

Jim, there are now 2 machines local to you. 1 at Grosvenor BMW in Reading and 1 at Autotech BMW in Slough. I would recommend both garages. Grosvenor is a high quality BMW specialist, top professional service there. John Goatley at Autotech runs a smaller garage but what a lovely guy he is to deal with. Still only 1 Jag specialist in 3 years at it, obviously the same ZF boxes only go wrong in BMW's and Land Rovers???? Where are you Jag boys? Get with this Century please.

Sorry Jim it was the other Jim I was sending that to. We have been talking gearboxes for a while! If you ever want to change gearbox oil properly, I am sure that I can inform you of a closer machine.

    Thanks Richard.

So many Jims, Jims with Jags and one Jam with a Jag too!

I'll probably get it over to Grosvenor, they are closer so I can get picked up.

Do you know or remember if they use generic 6-speed fluid or ZF LF6?

    Any particular contact name?
Don't believe anything I say - Alzheimer's is setting in!

    Ah, my mistake, sorry.

In that case, please do let me know where I can find a machine somewhere in the Midlands around Birmingham/Coventry.

You want to ask for Pete, the owner and say that Richard has recommended them to you. They keep both generic and 6 Lifetime in stock as they are a top BMW specialist. Get a quote first!! Great garage though, I would believe that the job would be done right.

A nice little garage in Nuneaton called JM Diagnostics. Good guys there, they do a lot of deep diagnostic work. They will do a good job. Phone for a quote and mention that I recommended them to you.
