Hi all, my car is a 2008 Jaguar XKR coupe. The AFS warning light is flashing on the dash for a few days now, and the left headlight is pointing downwards...Jaguar has issued a technical bulletin in 2014 regardind the AFS warning light, pointing out that the problem is with the ADAPTIVE headlamp leveling control module (part nmbr:C2P23697)

Do you know where this is located?

I'm not too familiar with that system because my car doesn't have it. I do have the workshop manual though, but it's a little ambiguous. In the diagrams showing the component locations for the lighting system it seems to point to that module being either in the driver's side (for RHD cars) footwell or in the engine bay just on the other side of the bulkhead, but in the instructions for removing and refitting that module it seems to be behind the trim panel where the bonnet release lever is located, which is on the passenger side footwell (again for RHD cars).

You can grab a copy of the workshop manual for free at www.jagrepair.com.

Incidentally, are you the same Dr. G that posts regularly in Pistonheads forum?

Hi, I do have the service manual and it is not clear where the AFS control module is located. Some people think it is behind each headlight, but that's the AFS power module...

I used to post regularly at some Ferrari forums when I had a Ferrari 360 Modena (in Cyprus) but I sold that back to the UK in 2015..

There are Xenon igniter/ballast modules mounted on the underside of each lamp cluster as well. But yes, it's not very obvious where the AFS module is. It looks to me like it's in the same place as the normal levelling module for cars without AFS, just a different module. Doesn't look too tricky to get to the area in the left-side footwell, might be worth getting in there for a look, there should be a label on whatever module is there with a part number on it.

EDIT to add - Ah, probably not the same Dr G then, the chap on PH is or was a car salesman for an Audi dealership I think.

That's what mine shows too, but if you continue to the section titled "Headlamp Leveling Module" under Lighting > Exterior Lighting > Removal and Installation it describes the part as located in the left-side front footwell. Maybe that part moves between LHD and RHD cars, which side drive is your car?

OK, well the removal and installation instructions show the module as located behind the trim panel that the bonnet release catch is on, although the first image in that procedure does show the steering wheel on that side which would indicate a LHD car. It does also say Left Hand side shown, right hand similar - so could be that these two things point towards it being on either side depending on whether the car is LHD or RHD.

I'd start by following the steps to remove that trim panel, with a bit of luck you'll find the module behind there but if not then chances are it's behind the corresponding panel on the other side.

Ok, I swapped the two headlights and unfortunately the problem follows the left headlight....

I am wondering whether I should go for a new -expensive- headlight or try my luck and hand it over to some xenon light specialist who will try and fix it....

Been today at the Jaguar dealership/service for the AFS warning light.

They called me and said that it is the AFS control module (smwhr near the RH side footwell). What puzzles me is that I swapped the 2 headlights and the problem follows the Left headlamp....

I told them to proceed with the order of the control module and see what happens...

Sorry, I logged on to reply last night and got sidetracked...

Interesting that the problem swapped sides along with the headlamp, but there could be some logic in the system to allow the same modules to be used for LHD and RHD markets so perhaps the connection between the modules and the lamp clusters is intelligent in some way.

Hopefully that fixes it, let us know how you get on.
