air con

Hi,
With the recent hot weather i have found that my air con on my 2005 se 3.0 s type isnt blowing cold (warm in fact).I have checked under bonnet for leaks etc but all looks good.Should i be able to hear any motor or pump starting when turning the air con on and off ,from under the bonnet. I assume that all the air con workings are just to the left of the radiator on the drivers side.Would you think its just a case of re-gassing. The outside temp is reading right also.Would appreciate your thoughts/experiences

Hi Steve

exactly the same boat as you. when I turn on the A/C it does fire up (just about hear it under the bonnet) I have an aircon service booked for monday. fingers crossed it is just that. although mine seems slightly cooler on the passenger side than the drivers side.

let us know how you get on.
The first step is a re-gassing, but if it's been low/empty of gas for a long time you may have leaks and/or compressor issues, the regas will show any serious leaks as part of the process, I just took mine to kwik krap and they did it no booking required, takes around an hour I think, icy cold afterwards.
There is also a mod you can do to a valve in the compressor on the 3.0s if you have the older style compressor.
The TSB is JTB00183NAS1 I'd attach the PDF but the miserly attachment allowance won't let me.
Well just had mine re gassed and all is well. hopefuly yours should be the same.
I had mine serviced recently (first time in 7.5years) and it's made a huge difference. You don't notice a gradual falling off in efficiency, but it's now working as the manufacturer intended it to do .
Had mine done Saturday at kwikies the young fella couldnt find where to plug his machine in, asked me, "no idea mate," he then looked at thair computer, no help he then googled it on his mobile, still no joy, he then took a few plastic covers off and found it at the back right hand side, but only one conection, he had two hoses in his hand one low presure one high presure Oh he said I think yours has only the low presure type it happens sometimes... should I start worrying, but no fifty mins later its hunky-dory cold as ice, forty nine quid, no probs but he then said if you'd had it done in the winter its only twenty five quid, stared at him blankly and thought to myself why would I want to shell out twenty five quid in Febuaryfor air con..
well good news.had mine re gassed yesterday,£49. all seems good at moment ,icy cold. the mechanic said there was nothing in the system, does this point to a leak or does it lose gas as a matter of course?
Yes it loses 10% of it's charge every year, that's probably why manufacturers recommend an a/c service every two years. It's also important to know it contains a lubricant for the compressor too and it should be run at least once a week to maintain the various seals even through winter.
I guess mine must have been done just before I bought her, we went out the other day in 26 degree heat and my wife was complaining she was cold after about ten minutes!

Air con doesn't just blow cold air. It blows dry air so with the heater on in winter your windows stay clear ie dont steam up and you keep the car at a nice warm temp.

It's under the car behind the n/s front wheel.

I wouldn't let that team check my tyre pressures. there ARE 2 connectors on the S type, one in the engine bay and the other is hidden just by the N/S inner wheel arch, (at the bottom of the inner arch, N/S at floor pan level.
Me? I'd go back and ask for my money back because from what you have said, the job hasn't been done correctly.
Oh, and the air con SHOULD be run all the time. It recommends it in the handbook. "Automatic Climate Control"
Is the general consensus to leave it on auto all the time and just adjust the temp to suit the weather then?
I can't speak for others but I leave mine on all the time, Jaguar recommend that that is the correct way to operate the system. Works well for me AND it gives some indication when the filter needs changing, the screen WILL start to mist up.........change the filter........all is well, because some "garages" SAY they've changed the filter and they charge you for a new one and in fact, they haven't. It did happen to me at a Jaguar dealers some years ago.
Do what I do Brian, get them to put all the old filters/parts in the new filter/parts boxes and leave in a box/bag in the boot
Sounds like a plan!
When I said filter I should have said pollen/cabin filter. Sorry for any confusion.
Mines just been regased and it still reads 17.2 degrees, he put it on a reader but no codes came up. Wondering what to do next fuse maybe?
