Me!

I topped the oil up last Sunday. I've been riding my motorbike to work all. Week. Today I drove to Blackburn from Wigan and smelled a burning smell.... I oppened the bonnet and there is oil EVERYWHERE.

I had forgotten to put the filler cap back on.

No oil at all in the engine!

I had the engine steam cleaned and had to take to. Kwik Fart for an oil and filter change.

Not my finest hour.

Similar experience with my first car.....

PA Cresta 1962 - changed oil and filter, but had a kink in the oil filter canister 'o' ring.
Oil pissed out onto the floor as I was filling it ........ we all learn by our mistakes.....

A few years ago when I had my old escort work van. I changed the brake pipes on the rear and due to the number of times I removed the rear wheels to bleed the system etc I must have forgotten to torque then up and lost the wheel nuts and one wheel came off at 25mph. Didn;t do too much damage and as I had all the tools in the van I jacked it her up and removed one nut from each of the other wheels to use on the rogue one to get me home. What a div, after 40 years of vehicle ownership too :-D

When I sold my last XJ, the buyer sent out a mechanic for a pre purchase inspection. When he was looking around the back of the car, he drew my attention to what appeared to be a massive oil leak. All of the undercarriage was covered in oil, and I could even see some dripping onto the tarmac.

I was totally confused and very embarrassed as I thought the car was in perfect condition - neither of us could work out where it was coming from until I lifted the boot carpet and remembered the previous owner had left a can of oil in the spare wheel well, which had subsequently burst open and was now slowly leaking out through the boot drain holes.

Not my finest hour either!

Just think Lance, all that oil will help to keep everything lubricated and the rust at bay also. Nice and clean now as well so win win I’d say.

Did you clean the engine bay yourself or get it steam cleaned. If it was steamed where did you get it done as I am in Wigan too and I have some oil to clean up due to a weeping oil filter seal.

Last time I checked the oil level I had to take my glasses off, 'cause I can see better without them on short distance and it was kind of darkish.

Oil level was good, closed the bonnet, started the car and realised I couldn't see really well.

My glasses where still on the engine.

In pieces.
