Thinking of this as an option on an X351 vs a V6 diesel (or V8 petrol) since I don't do many miles. Anyone got any experience of this engine? Interested in how it 'drives' and reliability. Many thanks

That would be a very nice his n hers right there Chris.

Some great forum members have these and live with them on a daily basis as you know, no doubt they'll chime in soon.

Wondering if you might be lucky enough to find one before June? ;)

The V6 is very similar to the V8. Pre 2015ish there are issues with water pumps and some pipes but easy enough to resolve when you haven’t overheated the engine.
There is also a question mark on the longevity of the timing chain guides. 100k miles is the limit for some.
Post 2015, updated parts were used and usually there are no issues.

From a chap that actually has a V6 (he's on the US forum, not this one):

It's a sweet engine it's used in the F-Type as well as XJ, after year 14 they upgraded the chain and tensioners and I have never heard of one failing to date, my car is the V6 petrol 340 BHP pulls like an express train faster than the diesel by miles

I had the 3 litre petrol V6 engine in my second XF. Considerably more power than the diesel engine and as far as my car was concerned had absolutely no problems with the engine in the 2+ years that I owned it. As mentioned above, it was the most popular engine in the F Type. Your only problem in the UK will be finding one, they are more rare than a V8.

I recommend you drive one. There are mixed opinions, but I found the 380bhp version in my XF-S a bit gutless.

The diesel may have less power, but considerably more torque and I think that suits the character of the XJ much better.

I would get the V8 if you want a petrol - the best of both power and torque worlds and not that much of a penalty in fuel consumption.

I have had one for the year no problem with (egr dpf turbo) average 24 mpg only had gearshift change and starter, smooth quick and quite

Definitely recommend the V8, just change the oil every 6000 miles with the correct spec Jag oil.

They seem to be reliable engines that make a great noise.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like a V6 or V8 could be on the cards if I find the right one
I have first dibs on the next 2019+ V8 Autobiography (light interior).
