Rich,

Keep us posted on the upgrades, especially the Tremec if that's the route you take.

I was offered a manual conversaion for about the £2500 mark inc gearbox (Getrag) the other day....very tempting considering the amount of work required.

If you're looking for some 17"'s, I have a set going that were fitted to the car in 1993 by Jaguar with 275/40/17's on them. Won't be wanting a lot for them either ;-)

Hi all

Could someone please either post or link to pictures of the Zytek ECU's you guys are talking about.

Espically any sockets on it for programing.

I run an old Zytek unit from 1986ish vintage, I have the software & break out box for it all fully working.

I have created new maps for my car & others.

Just stumbled across this when I was surfing the net.

Sorry never owned a Jag!

There's a couple of complete Zytek XJR-s wiring looms on fleabay with photos which may help you? If not, let me know and I'll take a photo of my ecu. If you have the ability to remap these and you know what you're doing you could be a useful contact to us!!! ;-)

I can not tell by the ebay pictures.
Your unit has been built in a big quanity & has a cosummer type big plug.

The unit's I mess with is ex 1988 F1 stuff & F3000 that look more home made than the Jag one.

What I need to know is there a socket on the ECU that looks like a din socket, or it may be on the loom or under a cover.

It may also be some other type of 5 pin plug.

The Zytek break out box needs 12V feed & earth. Other pins go to the EEPROM, Logic chip & live data stream.

Yes if yours is compatible with what I have then I know I thing or two about it.

Zytek never did a manual for the ECU I use as it was ment for pro teams who Zytek talked to direct.

With the help of a manager from Zytek & a ex pro tuner who worked with the ECU's I wrote an instruction manual for it & reconfigured the software so it would run on modern computers .

Zytek tell me as far as they know I am the only person with working software & the break out box.

I can alter anything the ECU controls, show live data, reflash it & print off fuel & ignition tables etc.

MMmmmm...very interesting.

I'll have look in the light tomorrow and advise. I'm sure there are other R-s owners out there that would be interested in talking to you as the ECU support/knowledge is virtually non-existant.

thanks I am an R-S owner but have the more sensible 5.3  .....

On a different note i see you are from maidstone, so am i well aylesford but am normally out and about in the Jag on the weekends, but have yet to see another XJR-s in the area, will wave if i see you :D

Hello guys,

Two things to add:

1. Howie. I would definitely be interested in the software and break-out box. Would you be willing to share your approach? I'd be happy to copy and share the software either host on-line or by CD etc. I assume the box adapts to USB and is straightforward to manufacture? It would be great if you're able to share some technical info. How did you manage to get hold of a soft copy?

and

2. I've been driving quite a lot since I got my XJR-s back into service (92MY but 91 pre production version of youtube fame). It's quite astonishing how it has loosened up and other than the petrol consumption (av 16-17 mpg with a mix of A road fairly aggressive and some town driving over 750 miles in four weeks and an unsustainably large amount of cash) I'd have to say I'm completely smitten! She was a bit stiff and lumpy at first but has really settled down. What was a harsh drive now feels firm and responsive. 0 - 40 acceleration is good but not exciting, 40 - a lot is fabulous and puts a real smile on my face, the way she keeps going is astonishing. I don't find the GM box unresponsive - she just needs some aggressive driving to liven up, if I use a manual shift down into 2nd and/or red line it to 1st and then change to 2nd with my foot hard down I've had my daughter time it to 60 in around 6.5 - (which either means I'm kidding myself, she can't use a stopwatch or this car is better than billed at the time) but it's the way the acceleration keeps on increasing that puts the biggest smile on my face. No tramlining, drives straight and true, sticks like glue to the road and sounds glorious. She needs TLC inside and the engine bay's a bit poor. Air con doesn't cool and the central fans are knack'd but that's all to be done once I stop driving and start saving - later!!

Still be interested to meet anyone in or around Yorkshire +/- 100 miles who has some experience of V12s who'd be happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with a newbie.

I plan to get some piccies taken soon and I'll post.

Nigel

If someone can confirm if the unit has the plug I talked about above then I have no issues uploading the software for all to use.

However remember Zytek own the copyright however they don't seem to be to bothered about 24 year old software!

I have tweaked the program so it runs on anything Windows upto & including XP.

It's a DOS program.

You will not be able to do anything with the ECU unless you have the adapter box however.

If someone has the EEPROM chip from an old ECU I should be able to pull the map off that to include with the program.

You can then see all your ECU calibrations etc.

O.K I have spoken to my contact at Zytek & he knows your system pretty well.

My software & adapter will not work with your ECU.

They did new software & changed how the ECU "talks" to the computer.

I use DAT dump files where as yours are EM3 spec files.

So there is no chance of it working. Sorry I couldn't help.

Howie,

Thanks for trying to help though. I really appreciate the thought.

Could I ask a cheeky question? Would you ask your Zytek contact if he knows where any of the later software and comms cabling could be obtained?

If he/she would be happy for me to contact I can let you have my email address if you send me a private message.

All the best, and happy ECUing!

Nigel

As the XJS Zytek support is almost non-existent the only real option is to switch over to an alternative controller. There are plenty to choose from thanks to modern motorsport:

Motec
Emerald
DTA
Weber
Omex

Are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. I have fitted Motec to a few cars in the past and it is not a difficult job especially if the engine in question is already fuel injected as all the sensor are in place. Developing the map is the only slightly tricky bit as you need a lot of time on a rolling road. For a road car the real pain is getting the cold running right as you can only test this when the engine is cold. The new generation of ECU have a lot more computing power than the old ones thus they can control the fuel and spark so much better resulting in improved power and economy. When I did my Porsche I found an extra 20bhp for the same economy just by replacing the ancient Motronic for a Motec. I was then able to really match the mapping to other modification like better exhaust flow and cam changes etc.

Hi

My contact was at Zytek when your ECU was built, all what he tells me is from memory, Zytek as a company offers no support for the old ECU's as that was Jags responsability. They dealt with Jag not the public.

All of the old software & stuff to do with these old ECU's was either sold on or thrown away.

The guy gave up some of his own time to help me as Zytek do not offer any thing for 20 year old ECU's!

He does not know of anyone with the software. Sorry.

Bye bye. :D

Hi All,

Since buying an XJR-S I've found it quite difficult to get accurate information and knowledge about the car. So perhaps slightly in vain, I'm trying to pull together one central resource for all things JaguarSport. There's a few bits dotted around and knowledge in peoples heads/laptops, so if you are an owner or enthusiast, please come and share - Home | Forum

I'm a big fan of this site, so not trying to steal members, only help them!

The site is a green-field at the moment, so come and share if you can. I don't bite.

FYI - we currently have 43 6.0 V12 XJR-S registered on the JEC database. It may well be the case that not all of them are using the JEC Bulletin Board :( Maybe an article drafted on XJR-S published in the magazine might ignite a dialogue this subject.

Cheers, Rich
