Cam belt change

2048 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Cat1
I have just upgraded to a xf 3.0d (2010) from a s-type 4.2 and have to say I am massively impressed with it. It's low to mid range acceleration is way better than the v8 and its ride comfort is as good as or even better.
Any way the car has done 65000 miles so I'm getting the gearbox serviced but at what mileage should the cam belt be changed and is it 1 belt for both banks or does each bank have their own belt?

Hi, cam belt is 105,000 miles or ten years whichever is sooner, there is only one belt but there is a belt at the rear of the engine that drives the high pressure fuel pump, the service interval on this is longer about 150,000 miles I think, but a lot of people get both done together along with the water pup and auxiliary belt. Phil
Be aware that some unscrupulous garages may charge over £1000 for the cam-belt change. The book price has now been set at about £500. (This is for the main front belt).

The rear belts are a real pig to change.
First of all welcome aboard the forum, I hope you enjoy it.
I was also impressed with the power the 3.0D has and on top of that it’s a lovely looking car.

Ok I’ve had my problems with mine with the front doors corroding right through from the sound insulation pads inside the door ( worth checking on yours) and also poor Main Dealer Service.

Eventually after a hard fight with Jaguar and the involvement of Auto Express who published a story on the car, Jaguar replaced all four doors and I contributed an extra sum to get the front end and sills repainted. Sadly just a few weeks later I was involved in a very nasty accident and my pristine looking XF was written off.

It had only done 49883 miles and I was about to get the gearbox serviced by a specialist.

If you do a search on my topics you will find the story behind my car.

I hope this does not put you off enjoying what basically is a great car but let down through poor dealer service and once they reach a certain age ie out of warranty Jaguar just don’t think want to know.

Hi, a lot of jaguar dealers are doing it under the 3+ year plan for £375, worth shopping around. Phil
p.s. This is just for the cambelt.
Thanks for the information guys it's saved me a lot of money as I thought 60000 was the change belt limit.
I've been using a local independent workshop for the last 6 years with my s-type. Parts cost the same as from a jaguar dealer as he only uses genuine parts but his Labour charges are half the price of a main dealer. Also if he fits new parts and if it doesn't fix the problem then he doesn't charge for the parts or Labour.
I had to read that last sentence of yours twice , thats incredible . If your happy with your Local Indy then why not give
his business a mention , thats the best recommendation a Forum Member can have .
The Indy is called S & C Motors in Hound, just outside Southampton. He was recommended to me years ago by someone on this forum when I bought my first S-Type. Always helpful and honest, he keeps all the parts replaced for your inspection. On one occasion he worked on my car but as the fault was not rectified he refused to take payment. As the fault was non critical and had no effect on the running of the car I decided to live with it.
