Cars you have always admired but for some reason have never purchased

For many years I have been an admirer of the Subaru Legacy Estate , I can't really explain my admiration , I have never
owned one nor even ridden in one , but for some reason I always gaze in envy and respect when I see one on the road ,
always driven by respectable middle class country types who shop in Waitrose and know a good product when they see one .
A year or so ago I stopped at a Subaru Dealer out towards Chipping Norton to investigate this Legacy Fetish further and I
have to tell you that it was beautiful inside and an unusual blend of both quality and functionality , I remember clearly , sitting
inside thinking that this was indeed a lovely place to be and I would love to own one .
Well some years have passed and still I have never bought one and I can't really explain why , I have read many road tests
and even today when I spotted one in traffic and they aren't that common , I found myself drooling again at the mouth and
thinking I really have to buy one of these cars , Someday........
Is there anyone on the Forum who has an admiration for a particular car , a model that their attention is always drawn to but
for some reason they have never owned , perhaps like me you can't really explain it , perhaps for you it just represents something
that appeals to your sub consciousness , do you think you will ever scratch that itch ? Subaru Legacy Estate.......Beautiful

For me it's been..

Mazda RX-7 FD3S
Not bought one as for a good one they are still pretty expensive and for the ideal one I've always wanted they are about £40,000 as not many are in yellow with the wide bodywork and the rest of the Initial D modifications.

Jaguar XJS
Very nearly bought one before getting my second X-Type but due to the rust on the one I went to see I walked away, but at one time I would love to get one, the idea of a V12 Jaguar is a strong pull but it'll never sound like the XJR-15 I drooled over as a kid.

Jaguar XJ Super V8
Always wanted a black supercharged XJ in LWB with black interior, most super V8's don't have the black interior most have had light interior trim, did see one that matched what I was looking for but the only reason I didn't buy it was a car I loved much more popped up for sale, another Land Rover Discovery Metropolis V8!
This is mine. Just could not afford one.

I hanker after a Maserarti, but common sense allways kicks in!

:-D
The Mazda RX7 FD3S that Akatsuki mentions was another beautiful car design , I remember back in my Cosworth days
looking around a car forecourt that specialised in Japanese Grey Imports , it was just the engine I was never confident in

It's funny how many people are put off by a rotary engine but many of the failures are a result of improper operation by owners, they are very much like a two stroke in their rev happy nature and power delivery and just like a two stroke it's vital they are allowed to warm up correctly, are looked after carefully and you'll do well with one, but it will need a rebuild at some point but if cared for it won't be very frequently.
The 13B-REW was pretty reliable most of the horror stories come from owners of the 13B-MSP from the RX-8, the car was more affordable and more people bought it, didn't know how to care for it or use it and as a result the second hand market is full of cheap ones. I'm going to get another RX-8 I miss revving to 9000 before shifting gear :D
Peugeot 205 1.6 GTi.
I very nearly bought one for only £800 in 2002, but being only 19 at the time the insurance was over £3k! So I decided against it. They’re worth a fortune now and so I think I’ve missed my chance.
The Lotus Excel SE of the late 80's would be near the top of my list as IMHO it was one of the best handling front engine rear wheel drive cars produced that could be driven as a daily, had four seats and is an often overlooked Lotus car.

I found this one for sale with a quick Google and it looks a good one http://www.uksportscars.com/view/lo...full-magnolia-hide-interior-air-conditioning/

I have never met a man who owned a Lotus , I have always been a great admirer of the Esprit especially the later models ,
preferably in Mustard Yellow , a proper Norfolk Colour

I had the 1.9 Ian , H486TNG , it was the only car up to that point that I have ever owned where I wanted another , It was
head and shoulders above the Escort RS Turbo it replaced
Rover P6 3.5 litre V8.

This was the car Zero that sparked my interest in V8s , a 1973 3.5S in red with the black vinyl roof and quarter panels ,
it seems like yesterday I was sat on the Raleigh Chopper as it roared up the street , some said it was a poor mans Jaguar
but thinking back to those rusting Mk2 Xjs its where my money would have gone . Thanks for posting
It was the Triumph Stag for me. I used to fit in car audio and fitted dozens of Stags with some nice “ICE”

I also fitted cruise control systems so I got to drive loads of exotic stuff on the road.

I always said if I had to get rid of my fully restored SD1 Vitesse I would replace it with a Stag.

Out of all the car brands that are no longer available both Rover and Triumph are the two that I miss the most .
SD1 Vitesse or a Stag ? I think I would have to give it some thought as thats a difficult one

The Stag every time: I had the SD1 Vitesse from new, and it was the worst car I ever owned. It broke down the second day I had it, and had weekly problems thereafter. I sold it after six months at a colossal loss!
It looked and sounded lovely, but there the pleasure stopped.
British Leyland were supposed to be getting on top of their quality control at the time, but clearly mine was a sample of all of their problems.

I've always loved the citroen Ds safari

And a weirdly a moorlands green xj40!!

The xj40 has always been a car i've hankered over since my Dad sold his 89 3.6 what a wonderful car it was, i always thought its one of the best looking xj's ever.
+ the digi dash!!

The citroen Ds safari is a weird one.

i've just always loved their shape and funny hydraulic suspension + the seats are like arm chairs lol!

When i was young i always dreamed of owning a Porsche 928. I can't really tell you why, i just loved the shape as it was so different to the 911. Series 3 XJ was another, as i used to watch The Equalizer and thought Edward Woodward looked cool in it. In fact, i'd say it was that which got me into liking Jags in the first place really.

The only time my Vitesse let me down in 100k miles was after a five year lay up and partial restoration the fuel pump packed in on my way to my very first classic car show.
To compound things it happened in the middle of a contra flow but with some skillful driving and using the starter whilst slipping the clutch a bit I just managed to clear the contra flow.
Sad thing was all the other Classic cars passing me and not one stopped. I telephoned the missus and she towed me home with her 75. It was the first and only time she had towed a car but she managed without a hitch (pardon the pun)
The second hand fuel pump I fitted was still in use right up until I decided to place the car under wraps for the future.
BTW I used to work within an Austin Rover Main Dealer and the SD1's we sold were no worse than Jaguar for reliability.

I always loved them, and I bought one a few years ago, a 5.0 S4. Fantastic car - fast, comfortable and built like a battleship, but then it was very expensive when new. I paid £5k for it and sold it a couple of years later for £9k. It's the only car I really regret selling and would be worth a lot more now.

Your a proper motorist Willber with an interesting motoring history , Alec up in Oswestry is another . The two which strike a particular chord with
me for some reason are the Vauxhall Senator and the Hillman Avenger , I think its largely because of the respective markets they were aimed at
namely the Cortina/Escort buyer and the Consul/Granada buyer . British Leyland of course had a few competitors for that particular market also ,
perhaps with hindsight , too many that overlapped and stole sales from each other . Thanks for posting .
