Check Pedestrian System warning

The warning came on about two years ago when the old battery was failing. Last Thursday in the queue to check in to a ferry there was a lot of long waits where I turned the engine off and then restarted and it came on, and has stayed on even after four days and about 550 miles of driving. The Ctec battery monitor is generally amber, was green after a few hours on a borrowed 4 amp battery charger but turned amber again very quickly. No voltmeter here to check voltage so I think its down to a weak battery. Has anyone had the same issue, and was it the battery or a real problem with the pedestrian system? I am now in deepest France and not back until 22nd. The car still starts first time.

You will most likely have a defective impact sensor. A code reader will identify which one. It will not affect the drive ability of the car but be aware, the pedestrian system will not deploy should the worst happen.
If you have the XK you will be able to change the sensor from the top, if you have the XKR then you can change them by removing the undertray and doing it from underneath.

I have a couple of accelerometers from my erstwhile 2010 XF. (Unused replacements after the system deployed when I hit a dead badger.)
If they are the same as the XK, you're welcome to them.

What a lovely offer, Thank you. When I get home I will show the pictures to the specialist to see if they fit. I had not realised that the system used accelerometers and not just simple switches that closed if the nose cone was pushed back.

Thanks for the tip about the main screen John. I will try tomorrow. Today the message went away for a while, then came back again. The battery seems pretty good as it cranks the motor and starts it with no difficulty. I am staying down in Lot, near Cajarc, and visited Conques today.

I have the Check Pedestrian System warning appearing on pretty much every journey I do these days. It's fine at the start of the journey, but after going over a speed bump or stopping at a red traffic light, on it comes. I need to work out how to fix this in the most cost effective manner.

I have a brand new Bosch battery, so cannot be battery related, can it?

As JimboV8 says, it does not affect the car itself in terms of driving, but likely turns the car into a pedestrian killer if they don't hear you coming. I have a loud exhaust, so perhaps they will get out of the way.

Back home today so I will phone the specialist tomorrow. On a long fast trip yesterday the warning never came on until a bit of stop start getting on to Eurotunnel. I did a bit of searching today and it looks as if XK sensors are different from the ones OBC John kindly offered to me, but I also found a service bulletin on another forum. It is the 7th post on this page https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk-xkr-x150-33/2007-xkr-pedestrian-system-fault-67933/
I had wondered if the issue was a poor connection or corroded wiring/contacts which also seems to be a possibility.

Last year when I had this intermittent issue I had the codes read and it was one of the sensors.
I had both changed at around £120 each.
My alarm was sporadic and only came on if the weather was warm.

I wouldn't want to leave it too long before getting it sorted. I had the problem with the PPS on my XKR and had it fixed last year. I was warned about the possibility of faulty sensors setting of the air bags for the bonnet with the inevitable and considerable damage to the bonnet and bonnet hinges - I don't know if this has ever happened but I decided not to take the risk. My indy mechanic replaced my front sensors for a total of £383 incl.VAT. But if you're good with a spanner, no doubt you could do it yourself as others have done.

You might find this thread, also on here, of interest if you've not already seen it.

Its a good thing I am taking it in tomorrow, as today I tried out a plug in satnav, and found that the cigar lighter socket is dead, though it worked with a phone charger while we were away. The socket in the glove box works but is no use except to charge things like phones actually in the glovebox. I contorted myself into the passenger footwell and checked the fuses and all seem OK so I will have to ask the indy to look at it tomorrow. I think that there is a relay somewhere in the circuit and a fault there will show up with an error code.

Is the fuse for the 12v power socket in the glove box fuse no. 23 (10A, red) in the passenger compartment fuse box - "cabin accessory power"? Aagh! What a horrible fuse box to try to get access to!

I mistakenly though it was fuse no. F10 (10A, red) in the rear seat compartment fuse box - "Accessory connector B+", at least in my 2006 XK convertible.

What does "Accessory connector B+" mean?

Mine worked, powering an aftermarket sat nav that is much easier to use than the built in one, but today it was dead as a dodo. When it was working it had a blueish glow when nothing was plugged in. The one in the glovebox is useless for a satnav because you cannot close the glovebox with a cable coming out. I did have the ignition on, but there is no power now even with the engine on. I actually thought fuse 23 was for the lighter, but its intact and the glovebox socket is OK. I have just seen a fuse box diagram that says the cigar ligher is fuse 9 in the engine compartment fuse box, so that might be the problem

You could change them yourself and save the labour charge, very accessible on your car.

Mine had been displaying intermittently for quite a while before it went to permanently displaying the warning.

About a month ago when putting her away in the garage I was a little late on the brake & gave the rear wall a bit of a thump.

No damage done as I keep a thick piece of carpet padding there for that very reason.

Result, no more pedestrian warning displayed :)

I had the same warning on my 2013 XKR - 24K miles.
In France !
Took it to the dealer who diagnosed a fault PPS sensor at the front, and airbag at the top.
As it was under warranty, I had the lot replaced and the bill was a whopping 4.4K.
2 years later (Lockdown Years with less than 5K additional miles on the car) the flipping light came on again.
I took it back to the dealer who diagnosed a faulty LHS impact sensor.
He then diagnosed 1.2K to change it... despite my protestations that it was still new....

I bought the sensors from Jaguar and having recently removed the front bumper to fiddle with the lights, I know its not an impossible task, and there are plenty of photos on the forum to help with the change.

This really is a weak-spot in the XK.

I am discovering that the XK has a few weak spots including the water pump so now it looks like I need to sensors.

So a main stealer wants 1.2K to change one sensor (presumably Euros but still over £1,000). My Independant is going to charge about £580 for replacing two. Still a lot but not quite so bad. I agree that the system is a weak point and a pain in the a....

Bienvenue en France !
I was thinking 800 (Euro's) because its still France and EVERYTHING has to be reassuringly expensive...
580 is pretty good - 240 worth of parts + faffing about getting the bumper/tray off and back on.

You dont actually need the bumper off on the N/A cars, it's tight but you can do them from above.....just!

Full marks to Jagtechnic Landsport in Eastbourne. They did mine from below and it worked out much cheaper than forecast, total bill including the two sensors (which I think were £128 each) was £391 and some pence. I left the bill behind and will e-mail them for a copy. Whilst there I had a good look underneath, and the rear sub frames are a bit rusty. They showed me an X100 that has just had them removed, shot blasted, and powdercoated, plus new bushes. It looked an excellent job and I will get them to do mine at the end of summer when the car goes on SORN for the winter.

Edited to give Jagtechnic Landsport their full name.

Some of you out there will think that this is irresponsible but I removed the fuse years ago that controls this totally unnecessary system. I was warned that it can trigger without warning and without hitting an object and can cause very expensive damage to the bonnet.
