We have an 1984 Jaguar xj6. 2 issues currently that keep me up at night, here’s a scenario. If i start from a stop at moderate speed, it’ll shift from 1 -2 at 20kmh, then to 3rd at 35-40kmh. thats normal, sounds fine. but if i get up to 3rd gear, then have to stop. it’ll clunk and feel harsh shifting down to 1st. but if i dont let it shift to 3rd, AKA stop accelerating at 25-30 kmh and just float in 2nd gear, then stop, i feel no harshness? why would that be?

2nd problem, when i’m parked, car is on, and i go from p to r, i hear a clunk type of metallic noise, what would cause that?car drives fine, and i hear no humming or vibrations at speed, that would indicate a bad u joint. Anyone have any ideas?

Further up the creek.
It could be anything at all, you'll never get it diagnosed on an internet forum.

Get the car on a ramp and check underneath, as you say, it may be a bad UJ joint. You've obviously checked the gearbox fluid level, so that won't be the problem.

As said above, you need to get the car inspected from below, and also checked by an auto transmission specialist.
