E-Type Starter motor

My 1967 Series 1 4.2 (LHD) FHC has had an engine rebuild and all is well except for the starter motor which will not disengage if the engine does not start.
Even spinning the engine with sparkplugs removed, the starter does not disengage. There is no strange sounds from the starter motor and the pinion setting is correct, (I think.) The battery is new.
I had the starter pronounced in good working order before reassembly but doubt that if was checked under load. Do I take the starter out or is there any other checks I should do before tackling this job?

Hello Ian,

is it a pre engaged or an inertia type starter? Has either the starter pinion or the flywheel ring gear been replaced? I am suspecting that the pinion when engaged is tight to the ring gear. Also is it the original statrer motor?

Alec
Hi Alec,
Thank you for your input. It is a pre-engaged type, original to the engine and ring gear as far as I know. I will remove and double check but believe that the spigot plate and dowels have been correctly installed when starter was last fitted. Could the solenoid return spring have anything to do with this? Regards
Ian
Hello Ian,

yes the solenoid pulls the pinion into engagement then applies power to the motor. If the spring has failed or the linkage is tight for some reason that could be the answer. I suspect there is limited room but if you can remove the solenoid from the starter you can feel how the linkage is and whether it is free. Failing that the motor will need to come off for a good inspection.

Alec
Hi Alec,

I will give it a go and hope to confirm success soon. Thanks again.

Regards Ian
Just an update. I purchased a new starter motor which took many months to reach me in South Africa from the UK. Found the top dowel was not fitted to the original starter hence the pinion not disengaging. Now have a new stater fitted in the car and the original as a spare!
