Engine cutting out whilst driving

5489 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Maureensxtype
Twice recently, whilst driving the engine on my 2.0 diesel estate has cut out and the glow plug warning light has come on. The engine would not start using gear and clutch but after switching the ignition off very briefly and then on the engine started instantly. I also had two instances where after brief stops the engine would not fire until left for a few minutes and then all seems completely normal. Instinct tells me that if not fixed smartly it will fail to start at the most inconvenient time, probably in traffic and will not restart.
Can anyone suggest the cause - and the remedy?

Sounds like it's not getting fuel through, have you tried having the fault codes read?
Sounds like a similar issue i had with my 2.0d a little while back, mine was a faulty camshaft position sensor which are apparently prone to becoming faulty on an intermidant basis, the car would cut out while driving and after a couple of mins on the hard shoulder would fire up again and appear to be ok only to re-occur later in the day.

Replacements are c. £40-50? and it's easy to get the old one out
Thanks for responding

Thanks you redfox and trinitysmith for responding. I posted before noticing the earlier threads from Miz and Richard10002 which describe roughly similar symptoms. I am booked for a visit to my local garageman on Thursday but he does not have the specialised Jaguar software for reading codes. I'll report back on findings.
Ian, You write that your garage does not have Jag Diagnostic Equipment. If they encounter problems because of this (hopefully they won't) then Jag Specialist could be the answer. I have a Database with over 120 on covering the UK & Irish Republic. If you need a list of your nearest Jag Specialist? Just send me PM with your Town & County then I can send list to you. Same information available to others.

Roger.

Thanks you for taking the trouble to reply. I live near Stirling in Central Scotland and any leads would be appreciated. Jaguar main dealer in Perth and in Glasgow but that's a round trip of almost 100 miles.
Jag Specialist info would be very helpful.

Roger,
Sorry, I included the wrong quote - Thanks you for taking the trouble to reply. I live near Stirling in Central Scotland and any leads would be appreciated. Jaguar main dealers in Perth and in Glasgow but that's a round trip of almost 100 miles.
I had the same problem on my x-type 2.2D sport a few years ago, it was as someone else has suggested a faulty camshaft sensor, only cost £123 to replace including £40 diagnostic check from an independent garage. I believe Jag dealers charge £120 for the diagnostic check alone!
Ian, Unfortunately there are very few Jag Specialists in Scotland. Listed below is everything that I have for Scotland. Not all are Specialists but have been recommended by others. Wish I had more Specialists for you.
The rest of my Database for UK is with very few exceptions Jag Specialists only.

If anyone reading this knows of other Jag Specialists in Scotland? It would be very useful to me & other Members if you could let me know, then I can pass them on to others when they ask. I frequently get asked for a list of Jag Specialists in Scotland. As you can see am only able to give limited help. Would value any help with this.

I am also interested in the comments of anyone that has used any of those listed below, helps me keep track of what they are like. Your comments would be most helpful, in confidence by PM if you prefer.

Because I have not used any of these (too far away) they are not recommendations from me. However you can type their names in search box (top right of page) to see if Forum reveals anything, since New Forum software search function has been poor, hopefully this will improve. Recommend go take a look at them first see what you think. Some may do loan cars, always worth asking.

Roger.

If you are looking for a reliable mechanic in the Edinburgh area I can highly recommend Ross Macleod who is based just outside Edinburgh, apart from servicing Jaguar cars he has years of experience in servicing Aston Martin Bentley and Rolls Royce, if it's a prestige Marque this is the man you should be dealing with.

I've had a brilliant experience dealing with these people. It's basically a husband and wife team and the customer service I received was simply outstanding. I can't speak highly enough of Jamie such a nice guy. If you live anywhere within 100 miles of this place, take my advice and use them. It's about 4 miles out of Glasgow city centre.

Just put my 2001 XK8 into Charles Leslie for its service and general check over. Arrive at the workshop which is not very big and didnt give me a great feeling for leaving my car. However after speaking with the mechanic about a couple of issues with my car (main one being a smell of hot oil) he answered immediately and showed me where the problem was. Courtesy car was free and was clean and tidy(quatro 2.6 Audi). when i collected the car all jobs were done service book was stamped and everything was in order. Unlike Stratstone the car wasnt washed but unlike Stratstone the bill was very reasonable. I would recommend this garage for anybody looking for an enthusiast who cares about their work and is passionate about Jaguars. Only downside is they dont take cards for payment but its a small issue and one that can easily be sorted. I will be putting my X type in for a service soon. :D
