oop's wrong car

Around 2013 JLR changed the recommended oil for the XFR and XFR-S motors from 5W20 to 0W20.
For an XFR-S (as long as we are talking about the 550 PS 5.0 SC petrol V8 and not the diesel "R Sport") the recommended oil is fully synthetic long-life 0W20 which meets STJLR.51.5122, which replaced the recommendation for 5W20 Ford WSS M2C925A spec oil on the earlier XFR.
It's pretty much impossible these days to find an oil which still meets Ford WSS M2C925A spec, as that is a fairly old spec now and there is some evidence that the newer 945A spec is perfectly OK.
0W20 is designed for cold climates, I have used 5W20 945A spec oil in my XFR and F-Type as I'm in a fairly hot climate in Adelaide without any problems.
You do not want to use the 5W30 recommended for XF diesel motors, unless of course you do have a diesel!
Hi, I would check carefully, I believe the spec has changed to 0W20. Phil

Yeah its the 5.0 V8 550PS petrol model for sure. Thanks a lot.
I'm confused about which oil to use as well in my 2014 XFRS. In the owners manual, it says to use 0w-20 but on the oil cap it says 5w-20.... So which is it.. lol
As above, Jaguar changed the spec to reduce the timing tensioner/ guide wear issue.
Worth noting that they kept the spec when the timing setup was revised in 2015ish.

Either will be perfectly OK but it depends mainly on how cold it gets where the car is kept. If it gets below freezing often then you should go for 0W-20, if not then use 5W-20.
Either way you want an oil which meets the latest JLR spec and it doesn't need to be Castrol, there are plenty of others now available which meet the spec. Also you should go for an oil which meets ILSAC GF-6A spec (rather than the older GF-5) as 6A is specifically formulated to reduce timing chain wear which has been a problem on the AJ133 and AJ126.
