Front wheel bearing?

9039 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  inditime
Hi, my xtype makes a loud wurring noise when I steer to the left, even slightly, and more notable at high speed.
Seems to have got louder over time and I've put my money on it being the n/s front bearing and so I've booked it in to a garage on that basis.
Quote is £130, most of that being 2 hours labour.
Anyone else had this problem, if so how much did you pay?
Cheers
Chris

I forget exact amount for mine, it was a year ago...£120 about, at the local garage, not a Jag specialist and the replacement bearing has half the ABS sensor on it...make sure the bearing goes in right way round....and just last week the ABS light flashed on couple of times....the other half of the sensor needed replacing on same wheel
I have the same symptoms as you have Sov, I went the other way and bought all the expensive bits first.lol. new wheels , new tyres and new driveshafts. Im about to order two front bearings today to replace next week.
When going left the vibration/noise gets worse. Is that a sure sign that it is the n/s/f? Either way, I always replace in pairs, for piece of mind. I got quoted £170 per side from an Indi, but Im doing them myself.
I know about the Magnetic Encoder in the bearing, but im sure some suppliers have bearings with a coloured side to indicate the Encoder side of the bearing, which goes in first.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to know which side is which?
Oh forgot to say, my ns driveshaft was the worse of the two as well, it was really bad. But now with new driveshafts and 17" wheels, the bearing is so much more noticeable. Car is now at 91K miles.
HI guys, thanks for the replies. I didn't think I had any because no email notifications, but my settings must have changed since the site upgrade.
I've had the car in to the shop and the n/s wheel bearing was the problem (well the garage have said that's what they've replaced) and it is all now sorted. No noises coming from the front when steering to the left anymore, in fact it even seems to take the bumps better. The mechanic told me that when they got it on the ramp the wheel wobbled in there hands, so can't believe it passed its MOT 10 days before (at a different garage).
Total cost was £130 at a City Centre garage. Quite chuffed, no intrusive noises anymore (well apart from the engine rattle when idling...new tensioner kit on the shopping list next)
I think the n/s takes the brunt of the state of our roads and that's why issues with our cars seem to be on that side.

there seems to be bucket loads of bearings around this type of thing and price FORD MONDEO MK3 1.8 2.0 2.2 2.5 3.0 ST220 JAGUAR X FRONT WHEEL BEARING KIT ABS | eBay

so do these have the abs side thing or am i missing something here?
Well they do, but you need an ASB card to read the bearing ABS side. Generally, the metal side is outer and the brown/coloured plastic looking side is inner.

If you go to www.gandbaccessories.co.uk and ask for a ASB reader with your bearings, they will pop one in for free. 2x bearings + ASB card = £35 delivered inc. VAT.
