Heated door mirrors.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I did search first but couldn't find an answer.

I don't think the door mirror glass heats up. Like the X-Type and many cars, they are operated by selecting the heated rear screen button. I know this.
It was frosty this morning but the mirrors didn't show any signs of having a heated element inside, think they just defrosted naturally.

Anyone had this problem? Anyone know if there's a fuse? Can't see one mentioned.

Thanks in advance.

Apparently same as the X Type heated rear window

Did the rear window warm?

Scroll through here for heated rear screen fuse

It depends on ambient temperature as well - and whether the windscreen wipers are on.
Both my mirrors and rear screen do heat up but are very slow/poor.

Windscreen.......no problem.
Is it the rear screen defrost that operates the mirrors too ? I always thought it was the windscreen defrost that did it.

Have I been wrong all these years ?

Can you elaborate? Not heard this before.

And yes, the heated rear screen works, along with all the other electrical aspects of the door mirrors, even the night time auto dimming. They just don't seem to heat up.

I have had this before with the X-Type, it was the element in both mirrors on the back of the glass.
If the rear screen demister is on, the door mirrors should also be on. Its as simple as that. They should be warm to the touch after a couple of minutes.

That is my understanding too. Fairly standard operation. Maybe mine are bejiggered.
Ok, I've found out the definitive answer to this by speaking to a very helpful chap at Marshall Jaguar in Lincoln. I thought it only fair to share the answer, because most people don't know it.

As has been already hinted, they are automatic. The driver has no control over the heated door mirrors. They will operate automatically depending on the ambient temperature. They will also heat up more often if the wipers are switched on to reduce spray gathering on the glass when it's raining.

I don't know what the temperature is that triggers them, maybe it's 0°. Likewise I don't know if the temperature is a feature if it's raining or if they will heat up simply because the wipers are on.

I understand that the glass will heat up for 30 secs at a time.
Was surprised to read this and just checked the workshop manual and you are correct. Every day is a learning day!
To test this I sat in my car this morning for nearly 5 mins with engine running, a/c off & one sweep of the wipers. External temp was 6 C so no auto screen heaters. Mirrors didn't clear at all. Turned a/c & rear screen on - within a minute I could see them start to clear. Haven't read my handbook yet but that's next.
Worked when I turned on rear screen on my old S-Type

Yes, as does the X-Type and most other cars these days, which is why I raised this query.

As has been said, every day's a school day.

It certainly is a strange feature, don't know what's wrong with being able to switch it on or off yourself. With yours I can't help thinking that because you've sat there with the engine running for 6 minutes in 6° temperature the mirrors have just cleared naturally.
No, I can honestly say they didn't clear naturally. After nearly 5 mins there was no clearing of condensation at all. Only after turning on the rear screen did they start clearing.

I did this because whilst not disputing the printed evidence, it didn't make sense to me. Below 4-5 C both my front & rear screens turn on when starting, as with my STR, & this would activate the mirrors. This is not what has been stated though. Will get the handbook out in a minute.
Yes, same with mine for the auto screen front and back.

I'm sure we'll get plenty of chances to test this feature over the coming months. :-?
Just checked the handbook (pg 96) which says heating will come on automatically depending on ambient temp & conditions. I think it must still be linked to the rear heated screen as you can't have inoperable heated mirrors if your temp sensor fails. As long as it works I suppose 😊 & yes, Winter is coming lol.
