Hi Gaz.

There are many posts documenting the typical heating issue found by so many.
Of course, they may not apply to the Diesel model, I really don't know.

On my V6 petrol, I had to disconnect the heater hoses running along the inner wing O/S/F.
They will lose coolant of course, but that's inevitable.

Run a hose pipe to the car and connect to one of the heater pipes - crap should flow out of the second pipe.
I repeated this process using the opposite pipe to back-flush the heater matrix.

It was suggested that a cleaning chemical could be used for stubborn blockages.
I read somewhere that Steredent tablets in a solution also helps clear calcium build-up.

If this method fails, the matrix may have to be replaced - it seems quite common on these cars.
I believe someone has done that change from inside the car via the glovebox aperture.
If I read it correctly, the alternative is a dash removal (painful).

Try the matrix flush - it worked for me. Don't put radweld or similar anywhere near the coolant system.

Good Luck buddy.

Would a leaky water pump have anything to do with this issue. Thanks Phil. I did try searching here and on s type page but didnt find anything.

That's odd - I promise you I've seen quite a few.

What a strange coincidence - I too had a new water pump shortly after purchasing.
Mine wasn't due to a poor heater - it was leaking........
Your pump would have to be seriously bolloxed to mess with the heater.
If the waterways are getting up to temp, all the pump has to do is circulate the hot water.

Keep trying the search function - I know it's a pain, but keep pluggin' away.

Phil.
Not sure if the diesel has an auxiliary water pump but if it fails you can get cold air. Mine failed , worn brushes, and left me with no heat to speak of in the cabin but once fixed I had plenty of heat... on the passengers side! FFS looks like I have a blocked heater matrix as well. I have tried flushing but no joy so I am just building up to fit the replacement I have, I better do it soon as it's getting chilly.
+ 1 for the heater pump as a reason for the heater not working. A good way to check if this is the problem is whether the heater starts to work when you go faster, when the engine revs are more consistent for longer. The engine water pump only shifts enough coolant round the heater system at higher engine speeds, which is why an auxiliary electric pump is fitted. I have not had this problem with the X350 but had to change the brushes twice on my old X308 pump motor for this reason.
The Hozelock male to male adapter/connector is a perfect fit for the heater hoses next to the right side inner wing.
That's what I used on one of my XJR's.
Good luck.
